Whose Drive-train is it Anyways?

Sorry if this was covered elsewhere but can anyone tell me who makes the Second Gen Yaris engine and transmission? I am curious to know who actually builds the drive train components and if they are originally designed by Toyota or Mazda. I'd like to know if my 2008 Yaris hatchback is a an overpriced Mada or a budget Toyota. Thanks.

The 1 litre 3 cylinder engine used in Europe and Japan is technically a Daihatsu engine. Although they are owned by Toyota so.

Thanks. Just got the an 08 Yaris hatchback with 20k miles and planning on driving the wheels off of it! I've had much better luck with Toyota so when I heard the Yaris was assembled by Mazda I was disappointed. But now I know its a Toyota drivetrain, I'm happy once again.

I think its only the latest Yaris in the US market which is basically a Mazda.

I'm not 100% but i'm fairly sure all the MK2's in the US were made at the Toyota factory in France.

The 1KR-FE is also used by Peugeot as well.

Yes. Toyota has a joint venture with PSA. I think its in the Czech republic. They make the Aygo, Citreon C1 and Pugeot 107 now the 108 on the same production line. The engines are made at the engine plant in Poland.

Until it was canceled in the U.S. Market after model-year 2018, the Yaris hatchback was 100% Toyota & they all used the same time-tested, bulletproof 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine & drive-train from its debut in 2006 until its demise in 2018. Hilarious how Toyota canceled the most long-term reliable car that they sold in the U.S. market, and equally hilarious is how it sold in such minuscule numbers versus other Toyota models despite its stellar reliability. Subcompacts just don't sell in the U.S. unless they are dirt-cheap, no-frills, miserable economy appliances, because that is how most people here view that size-class.

The 'Yaris' Sedan that they released in 2016-2017 for the U.S. market is a rebadged Mazda2 sedan. The upcoming 2020 'Yaris' hatchback for the U.S. market is also a rebadged Mazda2 hatchback.

FU Toyota.

It was canceled here in Canada just recently, I bought a brand new one in Feb this year as a 2019. I feel fortunate because my previous car got totalled and I knew I had to go Toyota. I'm not buying a rebadged Mazda no matter how good it might be.

The 1NZ-FE has been in use since 1999 or 2000 in the Echo. It's basically about a 20 year old (proven) design. It's not a powerhouse by any means but reliable and efficient.
