About damned time! I was a bit disappointed in the overall tone of "there are rumors on the internet that it's possible" or "we don't know if it will work" when there are at least half a dozen confirmed builds on this forum alone, most of which are excruciatingly detailed and list what parts you need to make it happen.

I'm actually a little torn about this though--it potentially means more widespread support/demand for the swap which means more options but also means more "Honda Civic" kids poking their heads in and being a nuisance. I suppose that's the price of becoming famous, right? =)

Wonder how much there would be different swapping one of these into a 12-14 Yaris..

All of the ones I've seen are done using 06-11 cars.

Yeah, I saw it and couldn't agree with Cranky more. I didn't buy any of the fake coy acting about not knowing if it can be done. It's been done many times by our friends here

To your point, later in the video they made mention of "the internet" being right or wrong several times, so I'm sure they spent plenty of time here doing their homework.

Nonetheless, this is part of the "Yaris" attention I was referring to in the few posts about the site crashing and decaying.

Seems the 06-11 cars are easiest because you won't run into some of the immobilizer issues they did.

I wasn't sure if it would work or not precisely because of the security issues they ran into. Although from the sounds of it they had their resident electrical wizard wire in the immobiliser from the Corolla to the Yaris (somehow) and then modify the wiring loom at the front for the starter and alternator.

I'm amazed they didn't have any CAN issues and that the rest of the modules just happily talked to the immobiliser transplanted from the Corolla and the Corolla ECU. I would have thought the dash would light up like it was Christmas.

Now someone just needs to do a 2ZR/6 speed swap into an AWD Yaris - now that would be one hell of a rally car. Especially if you could put some mud tyres on it.

Dont think I haven't been thinking awd! I just need to find out if I can bolt a 2zr/1nz to an old rav4 transmission. The rest can be cut and welded to make work.

I wonder if you can get around that issue like MCM did by sticking the Corolla key near or attached to the transponder in the steering column. It'd be crude but it would get you running.

Or you could try the official Toyota procedure to register a new ECU with the immobiliser computer. Goes something like this.

1. Bridge pins 4 and 13 of the OBDII connector
2. Insert an existing key into the ignition and switch the ignition on and then leave for 30 min
3. Turn the ignition off and remove the bridge from pins 4 and 13
4. Start the car

Here's the procedure being performed on a Lexus ISF

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QocuEYNE6KM

atomic_hoji on this forum performed the same procedure on his Yaris 2zr conversion with success.

You know there actually is an AWD Yaris but i think most of them were probably sold as snow cars in the mountains of Japan and maybe a few made it to the US. I have never seen one in the UK. I think they were actually a permanent AWD system too a little different from the RAV4. Your project sounds very interesting though. Project Binky eat your heart out!

Also, I believe they were only available with the 1.3L engines, so not sure if they could handle much torque!

So you're saying theres a drop in solution to the rear differential, axles and suspension somewhere on this planet?

Might not be drop in due to chassis differences, but there was an NCP95 released in Japan that had 4WD. It came out with a 2NZ and if the parts manual is to be believed, has the same rear differential carrier and diff as a few Toyotas, including the ASA33 RAV4.

This is what the rear beam looked like. You can see the shape difference to accommodate the rear differential, as well as different hubs for the drive shafts. The link will eventually break, but for future reference, it's not hard to search Yahoo Japan for a NCP95 beam.

https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d403924569

And not trying to burst your bubble, but the NCP95 most likely had a different floor pan to accommodate the drive shaft/tail shaft running from front to rear. As you can see in this photo, there's a nice little hump running down the centre of the floor pan that I doubt 2WD models came with

Yea that appears to not fit. The lower shock mounts seem in different placement in relation to the spring.

I'm not worried about the floorplan, cutting and making room there will be the easy part. I've already assumed most of the floor and the whole tunnel will be cut out and rebuilt.

I think we need a new thread on this topic.

Yeah. You're probably right about the Yaris 4WD hardware not being able to stand up to the torque and power from a bigger engine. In this regard the RAV4 is a better choice as a donor. A lot of them shipped with 2L+ displacement engines and in the UK and Europe were very popular with the 2AD diesel engine.

I would love to see an AWD Yaris conversion build.
