Autocross Novice School - Tampa Bay area

For all the posers out there in Tampa or elsewhere in Central Florida who have never gone to an autocross because you didn't feel like you had enough experience and/or didn't want to embarrass yourself, here's your opportunity to learn in an stress-free environment!

FAST Autocross Novice School
St. Petersburg, FL
February 20, 2010

This is an annual school event put on by FAST (our local autocross club) specifically for newbs who know nothing at all about competitive driving. It's an all-day gig, from about 7:30-5pm. You'll get lots of track time and lot of instruction. You'll learn a lot and have a ton of fun! Even if you're not a complete and total newb, if you know "a little" you stand to learn "a lot". Even if you don't intend to take up the sport of autocrossing, you'll learn valuable skills that can save your butt and/or keep you from making expensive and dangerous mistakes on the street.

Pre-registration with payment ($60) is REQUIRED, and there are only about 16 slots available as of today.

Questions you're likely to ask:
  • Can I do this in my Yaris?
    YES
  • Can I do this in my automatic Yaris?
    YES
  • Can I do this in another vehicle?
YES (pretty much anything that doesn't have a high center of gravity, like an SUV)
  • Will this void my warranty?
NO (but I wouldn't make it a point to tell your service folks about it)
  • Will this hurt my car?
NO (will just put some extra wear on your tires)
  • Is there a risk of crashing?
Not unless you're really, really, really stupid. Our courses are set up to be safe under all circumstances. You're much more likely to crash your car on the way to or from the event than to do so while you're there.
  • How fast will I get to drive?
Autocross is about skill and precision, not speed. You won't go faster than 45-55 mph maximum. But, it will feel much faster.
  • Does my car need any special preparation?
NO (but, read the novice tips)
  • What are the driver requirements?
You must be a fully licensed driver. If you are under age 18, you must have a parent available in the morning to sign an insurance waiver.

If you have questions, feel free to ask them... but, be warned, if you ask something that is readily answered by clicking either of the links above, I will chide you mercilessly. All of the basic info is there, read it.
