Engine Braking???????
Hi Everyone I have a question. Don't know if thei was covered before, but I'll ask anyways.
There are times when I am driving downhill and my car will, what feels like, down shift. It's a 09 Yaris Sedan. IS this normal? is this what is called Engine braking? Kinda getting concerned. Let me know |

Yep it's normal. When you let completely off the throttle the Yaris enters Deceleration Fuel Cut Off (DFCO) at anything over approx 1100 rpm. No fuel is used during DFCO and you are engine braking. On steep grades the engine may actually downshift to help slow you down, most usually after the brake is applied in my experience. One of my favorite features of this transmission actually.

If you're still giving it gas that is not likely to happen, but if you've let off the gas it's normal, and is as you say "engine braking."

The ECU has "Downhill Logic" built in to sense acceleration with the throttle closed and shift accordingly. If you let it coast from a lower speed and gear, you'll feel it upshift and really take off. Touch the brake and it downshifts to let the engine's drag help slow the car down.

Are you driving in 3 instead of D? It's more noticeable in lower gears.
