Service Records

I was looking into a used end of lease 2005 and asked if he had any service records of maintenance done. He told me those records were confidential between the leasing company and owner and to just inspect the car, which looks fine.

Is it true generally that service records can be confidential from leasing companies? Why?

It is privet info. If they want to let you see them then they can. But it sounds like they are trying to hide something.

Don't know the answer to your question, but my used Yaris came out of the dealership with records. They gave me the complete carfax (well, I had to ask for the complete thing otherwise, they only give you the front page), and there was a diary in the glove compartment showing the maintenance done.

Seems to me not having access to records could give you grounds for negotiating harder? Just a thought.

Good luck with your decision.

Carfax is a good starting point but just because it comes back clean from Carfax doesnt mean that it hasnt been in a wreck or something else.

correct.. accidents do not have to be listed on carfax, they are not guaranteed as if the previous owner did not file insurance claim, it will not show. But it will give a small window into how the car was treated.. moreso than just peeking under the hood and kicking the tires... PS AFAIK AAA members get at least 1 free carfax report a yr through their membership, then get discount on ones after that.

It means he dosnt have any records. I had a car came into my shop once. Cause there was a oil light on. I was like when was the last time you had a oil change. Guess what the answer was. Never. And this car was 3 years old. Was still running on the original oil i guess until the pcv sucked enough oil through the intake till it finally got low enough to trip the oil pressure switch. I mean i feel bad for the next owner of the car. But imagine how much money she saved on maintanance lol. Just buy a car drive the car for 3 years and then sell it.

ANY Toyota dealer should be able to pull up the maintenance records..... sadly leased cars are usually not maintained by the book. No records? Keep shopping!
