I just found out about 3 hrs ago that a dent and some scratches have landed on my beloved Yaris RS. After a trip to the police station, based on the evidence, the policeman thought that somebody (that parked right beside me on the mall parking lot) must have swung the door opened really hard and hit my Yaris.

I don't get it, I always park the car in the centre of the lot, not too close to either side, almost always perfectly centred. And why did a careless b**** or son of a b**** had to open the door carelessly and hit my car, why? why? why? why? why?

So please, next time when you open your car door, please open it carefully! make sure that it doesn't come into contact with another car. Or if you do, at least leave a note/contact info and be responsible for what you do. Not to mention that if a person cannot open the car door appropriately/carefully, she/he shouldn't be driving on the road at all.

The policeman suggested me that I don't file anything, because my insurance rate may go up. Plus, the repair cost is probably less than the deductible ($500). He suggested that I pay for the repair myself. As a student on a tight budget, this really hurts, hopefully not for long.

To that b****/son of a b**** who has no decency to be responsible for your actions. I hope you rot in hell for eternity.

May i ask why u went to the police ? What would the police have done???

MOST people with a general interest in cars are extra careful not to hit their own car door on somoene elses --- i know i am! However, u cant really stop 4wd's and SUV's and soccer mums from bashign their doors into our rides we work so hard for! As you said you do, keep trying to park in the safest spot possible!

I always park in the "marathon walk to the doors" section of any parking lot, and always garage the car otherwise...

Because I need to file a report w/ the police b4 I can make a damage claim w/ the insurance company.

Normally, I usually do that too. But it was raining today in Calgary, and I didn't want to get wet, so I thought I'd park the car as close to the mall entrance as possible.

comf on the dent, mate. always on the back of my mind whenever I park my car in the mall or at the car park. but thing like this is going to happen sooner or later. I just wish its later... much much later.

Sorry to learn about that. I have been a victim too. That has happened to my other car, not the Yaris. I know how it feels.
I now always try to park at the end of a row, meaning that there can only be a car at one side of my car, the other side is either a wall or some plants, if not open space. But then, I have to open my door very carefully. If I cannot find one such parking stall, I will try to park next to a small and relatively new car that has been parked properly in the middle of the stall that it occupies, because I subjectively believe that the owner of such a car is probably the careful, skillful, and responsible type. Unfortunately there is a car on either side....... Believe me, there are people who can barely steer their cars into parking stalls.
I have seen people opening their car doors with their feet(is'nt that called kicking). Scary! Some people get off first and then scramble back, squeezing themselves back into their car interiors to grab a big bag or a dog or perhaps a baby(sometimes not a very cooperative one), using their backsides to keep their doors open. Guess what will happen?
I have always been hoping that one day automobile associations can issue "I won't dent" labels to their members to educate them to be careful. When I see a car with such a label, I will park next to it. Unfortunately, many a time, labels I can see on cars are imposing ones like "Baby onboard" or "Don't come too close, I hardly know you". I mean, what do you expect me to do? I am already being ultra careful and I don't tailgate(sorry for side tracking).
That said, please check the paint out. If the paint is intact, some people usually by the name of e.g. dent doctors may be able to push/pull the metal out. Please ask your Toyota dealership for information if you cannot find one. After the surgery, the dent will be basically invisible, though an impression is still left in your mind.

grrr, now i need to get check out my car, it was raining in calgary, and now i am scared that there could be a dent on my baby.

This exactly the reason why I am still considering "body side moldings" for my RS, despite the fact that they spoil the lines of the car. Shopping carts are another, perhaps more serious menace to our sheetmetal. I am just not convinced that the moldings will prevent damage, after all the door of an SUV probably weighs more than a Yaris.

I have always been tempted to install a bomb in my car hooked up to a very sensitive alarm.

Of course, some people might not like that.

I have been considering to hang protective sheets on my doors. However, doing this may invite intentional attacks by the jealous people.

Join the club Swug. The driver side of my door above the handle has a dent too. (thank god no scratches) Some ppl just dont care. They drive a beatup car and they park wutever way they want cos they dun give a sh*t

Are you going to get that dent fixed? If you are, then let us know how it turns out.

I'm planning to take my Yaris to one of those paintless dent removal places, after I finish all my final exams. The problem is it's not just the dent, there are also scratches - I'm not sure if they can fix these too.

From now on, I'll try to park my car as far from the crowded area as possible, no matter if it's raining or snowing.
