HUD OBD 2 Advice

Hi all

I've got an 07 Yaris, and my speedo is out by a few km's, eg have to do 65 to do 60, 108 to do 100 etc.

If I get a HUD that connects to my OBD 2 port, will it show the correct speed?

Anyone got any good recommendation on which one to get?

If I get one that connects to the OBD2 port, will I also get trip statistics etc? (assuming the HUD I buy has that feature)

(Australia here, so would rather get one here)

Thanks in advance

Greg

I have the same with my speedo.

I put a GPS speedo app on my phone and set it up on a window mount, but once I got used to how far out the speedo readings are, I don't bother with the GPS speedo any more.

Unfortunately, ADR18/03 states that the speedo must not read below the correct speed, but may read up to 10% plus 4 km/h higher than the correct speed.

I know the speeds, as I've had the car for a few years now and I've learned to adapt. But it would be nice to have the 'right' speed without having to think about it. Plus, the possible option of having access to fuel economy data would be good.

The ODB port will read the same speed as your speedo.

What tire size are you running?

Sorry to disagree with IllusionX, but the OBD port speed reading is more accurate than the speedometer. It agrees quite closely with GPS speed.
With the center instrument panel, you should have a blank area in front of the sterring wheel. If you get a bluetooth OBD11 device you coul pair it with a mobile phone running an app such as "Torque", whcih can provide a choice of several instruments on the display. My OBD11 reader came with apps for both iPhone and android. Torque has both a normal display mode, and a HUD mode that reverses the display so the reflection on the windscreen is the right way around,

If you want to use HUD mode, you will most likely find you need to apply a siutable film to the windscreen to get a good clear reflection.

Unless your needle is way off, the same information is being sent to both the onboard speedometer and the information pulled from the ODB port. So I'm not sure how you are getting GPS speed if your speed sensor is way off.

Although, torque does have the option to display GPS speed intead of reading the ODB port

With my GPS showing 60 km/h, the spedometer shows 65 and the OBd port shows 60-61.

It all depends on how the speed signals are decoded, how the speedometer is driven, and how well it has been calibrated When it was made.

If I do get one, (HUD) that shows fuel economy etc, would that info be available form the ECU? Would be nice to have that info from there.

Have a look at https://scangauge.com.au - these are not a HUD, but with the centre instrument cluster on your Yaris, you can mount it on the dash srqight in front of the driver.

I don't really know if the fuel consumption is read from the OBD port directly or calculated by the device itself.
