Drop in performance air filters which is best? - Toyota Yaris Forums

What are your guys take on drop in air filters. I was looking at the K&N. I am looking for better fuel economy with maybe some performance while keeping the stock setup. I heard there is also TRD filter and maybe few others.

My only experience was using a Jackson Racing drop-in filter in a CRX. I had bought a new Fram, OEM style and ran that for a bit. I then switched to the JR drop-in, and felt nothing. Didn't feel anything in power, and there was no difference in my mileage (I kept track of it since I bought the car). I then used a Zex open air (cone style) filter, with a swap meet special 3" tube attached to the stock air intake arm (in place of the stock air box), and felt a difference. The engine pulled to higher RPM, and MPG increased by a few. That engine was a stock DX (1.5L SOHC, non-VTEC).

I have a K&N. It feels like more power by lower revs and less fuel consumption.

I had the AFE drop-in filter part# 31-10150.

This filter requires no oil or cleaning kit. Just wash, dry and reuse. Main benefit of reusable drop-in filters is that you save money on buying replacement filters. Power gains are minimal but you can feel some gains if you open up the stock airbox. Fuel economy gain is probably minimal as well.

I have both the AFE drop-in filter and opened-up stock airbox for sale. PM me if interested.

Whats the main difference between AFE and K&N. They cost the same and look very simular.

K&N is an oil-type filter and AFE pro dry-s is a dry type filter. AFE also sells an oil-type filter if you prefer it

AFE is a better company IMO. Also AFE makes the drop-in filter for TRD USA but those are the oil-type filter.

Just a warning from those in dry, dusty areas. K&Ns are not known for stopping fine particals from entering the intake. I also own a Jeep Wrangler and K&Ns have been strongly not recommended due to numerous tests showing the above. I ran one as part of a CAI on my last car; but I think I will pass on the Yaris.

I believe it is quite unlikely any drop-in air filter can both filter and flow better simultaneously.

I got TRD drop in on both they seem slightly more responsive but I noticed it more on the SD A/T than the HB M/T also you should take the battery - off for 10 minutes so the ECU can start re-learning after 3 tanks the SD was getting not much but better mileage the HB haven't notice any mileage change.

I went with k&n drop in just cause it was in stock at the local store , I hacked the bottom of the air box off for more flow , sounds just like a short-ram intake and only cost 30 dollars. I noticed a lot more pick-up without having to really get on the gas , and about 2mpg better. I was gonna buy a blitz drop in , but it was 3 weeks+ delivery time was too long , k&n makes a good product , i've had like 5 or 6 differnt intakes on my cars all used k&n filters and no problems ever. Just dont over oil the filter after cleaning , thats when people f-up there mafs .

I've installed the K&N drop-in in my Yaris rather than going with an intake system. I've used K&N intake systems on previous vehicles (88 Mustang 5.0 / '95 Talon Turbo) with no issues/good results/nice sound. My only gripe was not being able to use the vehicle while servicing the filter.
With the drop-in I can put my still new OEM filter in for a few days while I clean, air dry and re-oil the K&N. And the TRD exhaust makes up for that missing intake moan.

Using a K&N drop-in filter myself. No issues noted. I like the idea of being able to clean and re-use the air filter over and over again.

Any small gain in horsepower and gas mileage is a bonus.
