Is the 60k miles service worth the $400 at the dealer?

I was just wondering if anyone had gone to the dealer for the 60k mile service. I haven't had the time to look in the manual to see what is included so I just wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks

There is no additional maintenance requirements at 60K other than oil change, oil filter change. Look at the air filter, cabin air filter and consider if a tire rotation is necessary.

Also, if you haven't already, consider changing the manual transmission gear oil. Use Redline MT-90, which you can buy from JEGS or other online retailers, or whatever Amsoil makes.

You should ask the Dealer what they are going to do for the $400.

Absolutly
Fact is, if you have been maintaining your car properly yourself for the last 60k miles,
there is nothing to do to it that would cost anywhere near a total of $400 worth of scheduled maintenance

I took a look online, (assuming your 60,000 miles roughly translates to 96,000km) I've already had that servicing done and it was 114.95 plus tax. I didn't replace the cabin air filter, which I think is another $40 or so if you ant that done.

The more major services would be 64k and 128k (40k and 80k miles) which according to Toyota is the Transmission fluid and the coolant (at the higher interval).

I'm not sure what they do in the US, but here in Canada that servicing includes:
-Oil change & filter
-remove wheels and inspect brakes (they only look, they don't do anything)
-check and top up all fluids
-check belts
-check battery
-check air filter
-inspect valve clearance (only listening to it)
-rotate tires if required but costs extra
-and a few other things checked.

basically it's worthless if you're out of warranty because they're only looking for things that could be damaged or need replacing to make more money off you (worthless, assuming you can do your own work and take care of your own car).

I just had one done for my 128,000km and they wanted $50 to adjust the rear brakes, $50 to remove rust and lube front slider pin and recomended I replace the front rotors and pads for a grand total of $450. I told them to put the car back together and I'd never be back for another 'maintenance service' again - cost me $150 for parts and I did the work myself. Hope that helps

Its so funny that they remove the wheels to inspect the brakes anyway, but still want to charge you extra for swapping the tires and "rotate" them.

Holy crap!
$400.00 is more than I've spent on maintenance in nearly three years of ownership.
I'm using synthetic oil (bought on sale at 50% off) with OEM oil filters (bought by the case from eBay, 50% of dealer cost after shipping) plus a K&N drop-in air filter (pay once on sale at 150% the cost of one OEM disposible filter, clean annually for life of the car).
Plus, 30 minutes in my driveway with simple hand tools is faster than any stealership could get me in and out and at my convenience.
Do it yourself = WIN-WIN!

For $400 you are basically getting an expensive oil change.

Yup, read the manual. No real service really needed until 100k.

When you take your car to my dealer for that they inspect the enire car and inform you in the direst possible tone of voice that your car needs $3000 worth of repairs IMMEDIATELY!

Now that all depends if you are either Male/Female or Old/Young. Then the Dollar amount changes.

Don't forget the $13 air filter change. It's not as easy to unpin the plastic cover as one may think... It takes at least 30 seconds..

At 60,000 miles (96,000km) it's essentially a huge inspect (look for problems) list:

--Looking for problems--
Inspect air filter element
Inspect ball joints
Inspect brake calipers and wheel cylinders
Inspect brake lines and hoses
Inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs
Inspect brake pad/shoe thickness
Inspect chassis nuts and bolts for looseness or damage
Inspect coolant, brake & washer fluid levels
Inspect drive belt for damage, adjust tension if required
Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect dust covers
Inspect engine coolant
Inspect engine valve clearance (auditably)
Inspect exhaust pipes and mountings
Inspect fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Inspect fuel tank cap gasket
Inspect lights, horn & wipers for proper function
Inspect radiator, condenser and/or intercooler
Inspect shock absorbers for looseness, damage, or leakage
Inspect steering gear box
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Inspect tires & adjust pressure as required, including spare
Inspect transmission fluid or oil
Lubricate locks, latches, and hinges
Rotate tires
= Dealer cost: $210?
or $0 DIY cost

--Actual replacement--
Replace cabin air filter ($10 DIY/$30 dealer)
Replace engine oil and oil filter ($20 DIY/$40 dealer)
Replace transmission fluid ($40 DIY/$120 dealer)
= $190 dealer replacement costs
or $70 DIY cost
