so what should I do? nothing is loose...or knocked off... can I play with the timing somehow like I used to do with the old distributors?? twist them around until it smooths out..??

Yeah you damaged the solinoid possibly when prying against something. Another memeber had the same issue doing something similar. I think he was changing a pulley or something.

I see a solenoid next to the stud that you use to pry the alternator bracket tight..it doesnt seem damaged at all
...after I changed the belt I did start it up without the harness plugged in there.. when I saw this I quickly plugged it in. It is tight and secure.... These computer controlled cars are suppose to adjust the timing automatically to some degree.. It seems to be a bit better than the initial roughness..but still not really smooth... the exhaust is not smooth. It runs ok... its not bad enough to not run and when under power its smooth enough. That solenoid doesnt seem to move at all... does it pull out..??? the scan gauge would say if it was a bad solenoid anyway.... the code is for advanced timing..... by the way ... can you or cant you buy an obd port machine that CAN make adjustments to some degree on these Toyotas..?? mechanics..?? If not, how can someone adjust the timing manually..??? there must be a way.. Last edited by yaris9876; 12-17-2009 at 05:55 PM. |

Sounds to me like you did in fact dammage the solenoid. At least that is the likely possibility. My first step would be to change it. Or at least look at it again. What else would throw that code?

that is a good comment..I knew there would be one eventually..
I actually thought of the battery a few minutes before I read this.... I bet it fixes it. by the way... this thing where you disconnect both terminals and touch positive to some metal to ground it... is this safe?? as long as both cables are off the battery....this unloads the capacitors and totally clears the learned memory thing..?? mechanics....
