Thumbs down CONSUMER REPORTS : March issue : 2010 YARIS sedan

or hatchback still NOT RECOMMENDED . YARIS sedan was put up against the NISSAN Versa S with the 1.8 ltr. engine . Why not the 1.6 ltr. VERSA ? They take the estimated mileage of the YARIS and divide it by 2 to get the m.p.g.. Which is an overall average of 32 m.p.g. . Not the real M.P.G. by driving it over a period of time . Biggest kick is that they give the YARIS a PREDICTED RELIABILITY of MUCH BETTER THAN AVERAGE while the VERSA ( 1.8ltr. ) is MUCH WORSE THAN AVERAGE . They show no for the YARIS . C.R. is getting to be a real .

I stopped reading CR when I realized that they didn't have a clue about what they're talking about.

The first major clue was the Yaris review...

I think someone at CR got their ass handed to them by a stock yaris on the highway and they've held a grudge ever since.

I keep seeing the Maroni Sticker on the cars here, and the Yaris just pi$$e$ me off. It still says 27 and 35, averaging only 32, tops. Every single customer that brings their Yaris here gets the same questions from me... What is YOUR average MPG? What mods do you have? How many miles so far? Where do you drive to and from every day? Ever take any trips anywhere? I keep hearing between 36 and 40 average MPG, not many mods here, and people drive anywhere from 2 miles to and fro, to going to and from Denver everyday (about 60 miles at a 75 MPH zone, most going 75 to 90 MPH average). Toyota needs to find out who is getting these averages and sue them, because not EVERY SINGLE PERSON could be wrong... it's just not possible. Corolla's do about 35 MPG average too, according to customers. Prius is about 46 to 50, depending on how long they have had the car. More distance and miles, the better the MPG. Most other vehicles are right on for the stickers. But Yaris is almost 6 MPG off on average... anyone feeling lied to?

nope . Both the automatic 2010 L.B. and '08 sedan with automatic average 35 m.p.g.. This is with very cold temps , 4 studded tires on each , and the winter blend of gas . The overall mileage goes up to around 38 when temps get warmer , studded tires are removed , and we get the summer gas .

Nothing written in CR would ever have the slightest impact of what I buy or drive.

The internet has replaced things like CR, as it has replaced a lot of old fashioned-y stuff I lurked around YarisWorld before purchasing and saw not only an excellent and active community, but that this car was an excellent piece of machinery!

The Yaris is documented to be virtually the most trouble free car available and CR knows it. The reason they don't recommend it is because they feel it lacks in driving feel and interior materials quality. Thing is, it leads in every other category. But they place too much value in those two spots.

I totally disagree with their assessment.

you think would look at the sticker price and realize IT'S A $12,000 CAR!!!!! i love both my yarises, but i knew going in i wasn't going to have 'lexus' quality interiors or be exactly 'sporty' right out of the box! that's what the aftermarket is for if you want, but bottom line - this is an economy car that does everything it is supposed to do very well!

The problem with CR is their criteria for a best buy can be very different than yours.

So, while they do offer some very useful info on products, one must still make up their own mind as to what is a best buy for them.

WTH? The Versa doesn't even have Stability control or traction control AND it costs more..
Edit: Actually it can get Stability & Traction control but you need to go with the power package which bumps the price up to over $16800..

Originally, CR did not recommend the Yaris because it lacked electronic stability control and was deficient in emergency handling (particularly the liftback). I guess they believe the addition of stability control still did not remedy the deficiency in emergency handling.

I read an article that indicated the Yaris was ranked 26 out of the top 30 subcompacts. They rated the Fit #1. I loved my 2008 Yaris but decided to test drive a Fit. I also noticed that they rated the Yaris down for all the things I liked about it. Soft ride, faster 0-60 than the Fit. Gauge cluster in the middle.

I love my new 2010 Yaris 5dr MT! I can drive right by those Fits and then fit into parking spaces they can't!

Who gives a shit what they think? Only someone who's owned a Yaris for a year or two can give a realistic review.

they take the EPA and divide it by 2 . Automatic : 29/35 . 32 when divided by 2 . Not real world mileage . What a farce .
