Bamboo in San Francisco (Union Square)

Just a couple of blocks from the the Apple store and the Ferrari store
that Bamboo that visited a few days ago, is Union Square, with all its luxury stores
like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Avenue, etc.,
and the posh St. Francis Hotel.
Bamboo wasn't really interested in all that. What Bamboo really wanted to do
is check out the ice-skating rink they built there, just for the holidays.
Bamboo also noticed that they were already erecting the Christmas tree,
even though these pictures were shot 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

Bambo in San Francisco (historical F line)

Muni has been the public transportation agency in San Francisco since 1912.
This is what Market Street looked like back then

Bamboo, like every tourist in SF and many of the locals, was fascinated by the F line,
running from Fisherman's Wharf to Castro, because that's where all the old restored street cars run.

Here, you can see Bamboo getting on an old Italian the tram, on Market Street.
This particular street car was built in 1928, in Milan, and was recently imported from Italy.

The F line features many older trams that have been beautifully restored.
They're really cool to look at inside and out (kind of like classic cars, but bigger ;).

If you come to San Francisco, you'll probably want to ride one.
Bamboo rode several different ones in the last couple of weeks and loved every minute of it.

Bambo in San Francisco (F Line, continued)

Here is a couple of green ones, built more recently (40's) in the US.
Bamboo's usual transportation in San Francisco has been ... the backpack!,
but it's nice to get out and get some air or hang from a pole or two

Bambo in San Francisco (Castro - Gay District)

Every tourist coming through San Francisco is a little curious about the "gay district."
Not to worry, it is by far one of the safest neighborhoods in the City. I have taken many out-of-towners there.
However, unless there is a neighborhood event or a street fair, there isn't too much to see or photograph.
A few bars, a handful of businesses, and a few rainbow flags scattered around and that's about it.

BamboCastro1.jpg

The neighborhood's old movie theater is kind of interesting, though, and shows all kinds of cool movies.
There is still a guy playing the organ in there, just like they used to, generations ago.
That alone is probably worth the price of admission!

BamboCastro2.jpg

Yes, Bamboo, they really serve drinks when you get you nails done, in there!

BamboCastro3.jpg

We went inside a hobby / craft shop but didn't find anything decent for
Bamboo to wear in there. Oh, well, never hurts to look.

BamboCastro4.jpg

Bamboo is really irresistible and this guy, on his way to a costume party,
let us have a quick picture. Nice guy, thanks man!

By the way, I can continue to feed the thread with Bamboo's San Francisco pics for a while, but he's ready to move on to his next destination anytime.

Let's make travel arrangements for him when people get back from Thanksgiving WE, or as soon as possible after that, alright? thanks!

Bamboo San Francisco (Cable Cars Part 1)

Bamboo has been interested in the Cable Cars since Day 1, when we walked
past the "depot"
Eventually, I had to get him a ticket so he could get a proper ride with all the tourists.
Cable cars are more than 100 years old and locals and tourists alike love them.
Everything you've ever wanted to know about cable cars is here .

Bamboo San Francisco (Cable Car Part 2 of 3)

In theory, you can hop on / hop off any San Francisco cable cars.
In reality, they're often so crowded, you have to walk to the beginning of the line to be sure you get on.
In past years, if you only rode a couple of stops, the gripman would let you get away with it and not collect the fare.
Nowadays, the cable car doesn't start until everybody has paid their $5 (each leg ).

Bamboo didn't mind standing in line too much but he was a little worried
and wondered if that 100 year old piece of wood would really be able to make it up the hill.

Not to worry Bamboo, they do it every day. I'll show you how.

It got so crowded in there after a couple of stops, that Bamboo had to go back in the backpack.
We got off at the top of the hill, where the cable car museum is.

Bamboo in San Francisco (Cable Cars , Part 3/3)

The cable car museum is free, and you can see the whole pulley system
that keeps cable cars from barrelling down the city's hills

Plus they have these neat old cars. Bamboo was happy to check it out
because nobody noticed he was climbing on stuff,
except one little guy who tried to take him home with him .
Almost lost Bamboo there.

Bamboo in San Francisco (meets the Giants!)

Too bad the baseball season was already over when Bamboo came to me.
That's OK, Bamboo still had a chance to meet the home team.
Can you see Bamboo swing his little Louisville slugger around?
Bamboo looked at the t-shirts, but they didn't have anything without the team's logo.

Bambo in San Francisco (Alamo Square)

Bamboo wanted to see the famous row of Victorian houses, located in Alamo Square, called the painted ladies.
We went there the afternoon of Thanksgiving, because it's easier to park in San Francisco during holidays.
It was a beautiful day and I let Bamboo do the driving. He's really good at it, too.

Can you see, way in the back, the Transamerica Pyramid (skinny, triangular building)
and the B of A building (big, brown building) that Bamboo showed you a few days ago?

Bambo in San Francisco (Haight / Ashbury)

I'm sure you have heard of the Summer of Love, the hippies and Haight Ashbury,
even though this was way before your time (a little before mine, too! ;)

Google it

Actually, I think this may be the neighborhood's homepage

Bamboo wanted to see where it all happened, so I took him there, for educational purposes only .

These days there aren't very many hippies left, but you can still see a few odd things here and there...

Er... are you sure you want to go in that shop, Bamboo?
OK, we'll have a quick look, then, then we'll get you something to eat.

(PS If anyone has any problem with any of the pics, PM me)

Bamboo in San Francisco (Baker's Beach)

After the Haight district, Bamboo was ready to see something different, so we drove up to the Beach.
But as it is often the case, in San Francisco, the fog was already in
and we were loosing the light really fast! Lately, it's getting dark at 5:00 pm!!!
Bamboo noticed something much more interesting on the right and insisted we go there next.

Alright, looks like Bamboo is on his way to JBougie to get a jacket, then he'll continue down the line starting with Staypuft.

I'll update the OP when I'm home tonight.

Right on.

By the way, for those of you who want to see Bamboo dressing up and measuring his clothes:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...&postcount=552

Bamboo is pretty much ready to go to its next destination now. I'm taking him out to dinner tonight, and maybe to the car show if I get off work early enough, and I guess that'll be it.

Bamboo has a couple more SF locations to show you, but I can post that up when he's in transit.

Bamboo in San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge)

Every tourist who comes to SF wants to see the Golden Gate Bridge.
Unfortunately for the tourists, the GG Bridge is usually busy playing hide and seek in the fog
at least a third of the time, especially in the summer when the fog is the thickest.
So when Bamboo saw that the bridge was completely clear,
he insisted that we check it out close up and personal even though it was already getting pretty dark.

On one of the pictures, Bamboo is seated on an actual piece of cable.
Tourist kids noticed him, and called out "Panda, panda!"

From the bridge, you can see the San Francisco skyline, when the weather is really clear.

If you go to the GG Bridge, BE SURE TO BRING A JACKET, because it is always VERY WINDY up there.

Check out wiki if you're interested in details about the GG bridge.
