I read a trick on the internet (it may have even been in this forum) that I used to get mine loose. It's pure ghetto garage and if you try it don't hold me responsible if you break something.
* I jacked the car up a bit, removed everything needed to get at the bolt. * I placed a cinder block under the car and directly underneath the pulley. * Grabbed a breaker bar (about 16" - 18") and used a socket made for air impact tools. * Placed the socket on the head of the bolt so that the handle of the breaker bar went into one of the holes in the cinder block. * I wedged another cinder block against the first one for a little extra insurance. * Put the key in the ignition and cranked the engine for a split second (gotta crank it and turn the key all the way off in one swift motion) heard a loud BANG (the breaker bar hitting the cinder block) and the bolt was loose. Didn't damage anything in the process. |

realized that the water pump is Under the shiny wheel that I was calling the tensioner wheel. It has 3 small bolts and shouldnt be hard to break those.
What SUCKS is I almost did serious damage by trying to get the fkn crank pulley off. It doesnt need to come off for a water pump change. I need to replace the wp just to get down the road to the dealer. I wouldnt never mess with pulling the whole front off of this little pain in the ass. |

Impact wrench is the only way to do it easily. Trying to jam the pulley can easily crack the aluminum parts you'd be bracing it against.
Already went through a water pump? |

nothing better than an impact. but, if you got no impact, leave the belts on it and put a breaker bar on there, smack it with a hammer. or, you can always try to lock the pulley down and take a chance of bending the old pulley...i'm assuming you got a new one...

07 Hatch 171K manual
actually my water pump looked perfect, but I already have a new one coming. I'll put it in... my problem is definitely the cam timing gear. If I could I would get a mechanic to install a regular non geared cam sprocket and do away with the entire VVTI system. But I probably couldnt find the right fit, unless someone knows how to do this??? by the way... my AC compressor pulley bearing is bad... I dont need AC so am going to install a smaller belt and bypass the AC. Anyone know the exact size of a smaller belt for that??? otherwise I will measure with a string...... |

A 1/2" ratchet with a 20" extension got mine off immediately. Didn't even really need any additional leverage. I also put a crowbar in the spokes of the pulley to hold it in place.
You could "rent" these by going to home depot / sears hardware / lowes, buying them, using them, then returning. I didn't see much use for a 1/2" ratchet, so I was quite thrilled to have gotten the install done without paying any additional money. |
