For how many miles do you expect to keep your Yaris?

How many miles do you expect to put on your Yaris before you get another car? I want to go for a million, and no, that is not a provocative troll post. I really and truly want to shoot for a million miles.

I'm not sure. My now 12 year old says she wants it when she turns 18 and goes off to college so the car will be 7 years old then. I barely put 10,000 miles a year on the car..I'm not sure I'll be ready to let it go before it hits 100,000 at least. She thinks she likes the car....I *love* it...

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not sure and will play it by ear. Sort of. lol

I may end up putting 12K-15K miles per year, depending if we travel much or not, still, I may give it up before or around 100K miles, by then my husband should be done with school and working, which means we'll be making enough money to get something a bit nicer (not that the yaris is not nice). I'm keeping an eye on the upcoming audi A1, we'll see if it comes to the US.

I figure I'll keep mine for about 5 years. So maybe around 90K.

Then see what new, more fuel efficient vehicles are out or coming out.

I had a 1982 Range Rover, back when they were real off-road vehicles and not status symbols. I put 520,000 miles on it lol.

Until the thing falls apart - but I highly doubt that would amount to a million miles. Lets assume you put 20k miles on the car each year - a higher than average number - it would take 50 years to reach 1000000.

Let's consider the feasibility of your desire:

- How long have you had your car?
- How many miles are on it?
- Now let's do the math and figure out how long you would have to own and drive it to make a million

My guess is you will find it highly unlikely if not impossible to reach that mark unless you plan on driving it for a living.

I wish you well in your pursuit, but it sounds a bit naive.

I'm driving mine until I get married and have kids. But in the meanwhile, my girlfriend has a Murano, so i don't really need to get anything. So I guess I'll drive mine till the kids need it. But...we're not engaged yet and are nowhere near ready for kids...so....I'll never stop driving?

I've got 43K on my 07 so far. With several sons needing to drive, I can envision this car being in the family a long time as a 2nd, 3rd or 4th car.

Why would you really want to keep it for a million miles anyways?

In 10 years, this car is going to be so outdated, it won't even be funny. 40MPG will be a joke -- hopefully. Even the iQ will blow the Yaris out of the water, and that should be here in a couple years.

Economically, it wouldn't make sense to keep this car for a long time.

I dunno - economically it didn't make sense for me to keep my Jeep that gets 13 to 16 mpg when I bought my Yaris - but I did. Not only that, but a month after I bought the Yaris I took a cross country trip (1700 miles one way) and drove the Jeep. Go figure.

Point is, there are reasons people keep cars around other than for the economy of it.

The day an all-electric/solar/air vehicles comes out with a range over 200 miles that costs less than $30k, the Yaris will go. Considering that day will probably not come for another 10 years, I will keep it that long. It has 35k miles on it after 2 years, and I drive about 13500 miles a year, so it will see about 170,000 miles before it goes.

With my current mileage, In the next 10 years I should expect to spend about $13,500 (at $5.00/gal and 48mpg) on gas, and $21,800 on insurance and maintenance ($3760 for regular maintenance, excluding repairs, and $18,000 for insurance). At around $35,000 for the next 10 years, the Yaris will certainly last until its replacement.
