3rd Gear problems

I apologize if this topic or something similar is already posted.

I would like to ask if anybody else experienced this sensation: whenever I put the car on the 3rd gear, it is really a rough transmission. Often, in fact, I have to do it ultra slowly and with great care, or else it will stay neutral and do an awful noise (kind of like something stuck in your throat (the closest thing I can compare with)).

Important to note that this only happens on the 3rd gear, all the other gear seem unaffected by this problem.

My toyota yaris is the first edition, bought new in 2004.

That would sound to me like either worn out syncros or most likely your 3rd gear itself has become very worn. When was the last time the transmission fluid was flushed and replaced? If this is the c50 transmission which I believe that it is then it is a somewhat of a known issue for the third gear wearing since it is your one to one ratio gear. Many times this will happen with people for 2nd gear as well however it all just depends on how hard the car is driven.

I believe the oil was never changed. It has 130,000km on the clock.

first thing you will want to do then anyway especially with the years of use and mileage is a flush and then moving to a synthetic trans fluid like AMSOIL, Redline, etc. You shoupd notice better shifting throughout.

I've got the same issue in mine, but I just wrote it off as a side effect of having a short-throw shifter and an engine-bay short throw bracket. It feels like it's actually trying to go into third before second has correctly disengaged, but the shift pattern blocker on the gear select rod should prevent that...

It is very difficult to describe to be fair. All I know is it makes a nasty grinding noise. To get around this, I engage the third gear in a more gentle manner. Keep the clutch pressed down until I feel totally comfortable that it won't make that grinding noise. It really is effecting my driving as I am all the time wondering whether or not I need the third gear, and if so to painstakingly engage the third gear in a way to not grind.

Was in an accident due to this in fact as I lost a bit of concentration in engaging the gear, luckily there was absolutely no damage between the two cars.

it is most likely a transmission part (collar/synchro, not to go into detail as im no expert).

but i echo the post above, it is best to start with the cheapest for now by changing gear oil and see if the problem goes away. (or probably check your shifter bushings or shift cable functionality, as i think the only other option left is rebuild transmission).

good luck!

What costs do you envisage I would incur to fix the problem?

The synchro is the least expensive part of the repair--you have to drop the gearbox, open it, remove the 4th and 5th gears from the shaft, and then reassemble it. I would expect it to be no less than 8 hours labor to do that, assuming there are no other problems. It may be cheaper to just get a used gearbox and have the shop do a remove & replace instead.
