My conversation with Toyota Canada

I have been assigned a case number with Toyota Canada, I do not want my cruise control removed, I want it fixed. When I purchased my Yaris, I paid extra to have the cruise control added, I use it all the time. Now Toyota, is refusing to replace it or fix it, giving me only one option to remove the unit. Therefor my comfort and safety is being compromised by another defective product from Toyota, or in this case a product approved for installation by Toyota. Add to all this, I am a licensed Amateur Radio operator, who has a VHF portable radio, so again, a recall by Toyota is not permitting me to enjoy my hobby. Has there been any talk of a class action lawsuit? If not, perhaps someone knows a good lawyer who can advise me and any other of the just under 9000 affected by this recall.

Tell them to give you a real Toyota cruise stalk and the parts mentioned in my DIY, and you can replace the Rostra aftermarket cruise control with OEM cruise control:

As Robichaud is a french name, i suppose you are french.

Jp for $90 cdn you can fit your own toyota cruise (less if you have AT) and not have another issue. Let toyota remove your current one and give you your money back, and then get the parts from CTscott.

That's surprising to hear, the letter I received in the fall said I could choose to keep it if I signed a waiver. The conditions that cause the malfunction are just ridiculous. Unless you're driving with a 2 way radio running on restricted emergency frequencies (and using it in transmit mode near the CC unit under the dash) you don't have anything to worry about. Just refuse to let them remove it.

Alternatively do what CTScott suggests, let them remove it. Have them order the parts you need to install the factory version, you'll come out ahead dollar-wise.

I have the described cruise control in my Yaris and I have some information that may be of interest.

First of all .. the Toyota dealer told me about the recall and told me that I would get $487 Canadian if they removed my cruise control. I told them I wanted to keep it as it never has caused me any problems.

I am also a Ham Radio Operator (aka Amateur Radio Operator) and as such I have a two way radio installed in my car.

This is where it gets interesting ... as I had a friend of mine attempt to cause problems for the cruise control. We were unable to cause any problems except in one circumstance. That one circumstance ... was that we had to plug the two way radio into the cigarette lighter outlet. It was here where we experienced problems with the cruise control.

We also tried many different frequencies and power levels and we were unable to have any problems until we plugged in a hand held radio into the cigarette lighter outlet.

So ... it is not likely that you will have problems. I personally am going to leave my cruise control in my car .. as someday I may want to use it.

Mine is a 2006 Canadian Yarii, I never had cruise control from dealer(rostra). I bought the Toyota Stalk cruise control kit from CTScott, installed it myself and it worked flawlessly... It is quite perfect. it even performed better than the cruise control on a MINI cooper.

I have never had problems with my cruise control (even though I have one of the recalled units) .. as a result I am not going to get it removed. My Toyota dealer said .. "if my check engine light comes on we will have to remove it".
