Unhappy Faulty fuel gauge???

I have a 1999 Toyota Yaris that has run extremely well over the years - no major problems and I am very happy with it. However, last week I filled the tank up and the fuel guage is still showing full to the top and usually after a week it shows that its gone down a bar or two, so not sure if it is faulty?? A friend of mine said that if its faulty it might be that I need a fuel tender and said it would cost LOADS of money!! Any suggestions???
