According to what are said on Page 178 of my 06 Canadian HB's manual, the car does not need an elaborate break-in. Nevertheless, the manual does provide some tips on what to do during the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km) to help improve the future economoy and longevity of the car.

It may vary between cars, but the usual or general rule of thumb is about 1K, it should say in the manual. Hope that helps and congrats!!

Does this mean I should keep it below a certain MPH?

hi! I got my Yaris Liftback (5 speed manual) and I'm pretty happy with it, so far. I'm mad that it doesn't have a tachometer, and the gearing is too short, atleast 5th should be way longer. I'm also annoyed I couldn't get my manual transmission liftback with the power package, even moreso that the Scion xA is a 5door (instead of 3 door USDM liftback) AND has PW,PL,PM,cruise,ABS, Pioneer CD/MP3/6speaker, etc.etc. STANDARD for only $1105 more than a base model Yaris :( but, it's a nice car.
The Yaris is my 4th car, I have a bunch of other project cars that I abuse at will. The Yaris is sacred, for now atleast.

Owner's Manual says 1000 miles (1600km) break in period. Don't keep the car at one speed for too long. Keep below 4000rpm (approximately). It's also nice to let the engine warm up before driving off (atleast let the blue "COOL" light turn off).

If you're gonna swap over to synthetic fluids, don't do it until 10,000 miles (16,000 km).
