Insane. Literal and figurative highway robbery. If those transportation departments were run like the city government in Sandy Springs, Georgia, they'd be more likely to still have enough...even with declining revenue.

Another reason not to buy a hybrid.

Unfortunately.

If such a tax were put into place in a state I lived in, I'd purposely not buy a hybrid (even if I had planned on buying one) just to keep that extra revenue from going into state coffers because of my action.

They should put more tax on larger cars since those are the ones that would be putting a lot more wear and tear on the roads. smfh....smfh....

No, they should cut some waste out and not take any additional money from ANYBODY since they already tax larger vehicles more.

Don't be so quick to sell everybody else out, eventually they will come for you and whatever it is you hold dear...like right now for example.

Yeah, no body should really be taxed anymore (if anything, it really should be all the big corporations that gets all the tax cuts and what nots, and the government officials themselves with their unnecessarily excessive salaries), but I was saying that in regards to their "road wear and tear" example that they mentioned in the article since that's why they're proposing additional taxes on hybrids.

This is a very sticky wicket indeed. From one perspective the entire reason for electric and hybrid vehicles is to reduce the footprint that we as human beings are laying upon the earth. Then of course there is the other which encompasses the standpoint that people are purchasing to save money over the long haul. I personally don't care for the pay by mile tariff however that is mainly for security reasons as well as how much of a PITA it would make for traveling personnel as it would require employers to have to deal with whatever system is put into place and then of course what about for personal mileage...would be a serious kick in the teeth.

Gas tax hasn't been raised in 18 years; I wish they would just raise to where it should be and get it over with. I'd pay it to have better roads and bridges. Around here (Pittsburgh), our roads are horrible. Also, any pure Electric car should have a tax imposed, since the owner does not contribute to the road tax. This would not include hybrids (Volt, Prius, etc)

Because Im sure it's all of the electric cars and hybrids that are tearing up the roads so bad....

Actually that's right! All cars and trucks, hybrids or otherwise, lightweight like a Yaris or heavy like a tractor trailer, contribute to the wear of roads. Therefore Electric cars (not hybrids) should pay for some part of that wear and tear that us gas users pay via gas tax.

Nobody is tying the arm of any gasoline powered car owner in PA's back and keeping them from buying an electric car (I know, it doesn't solve the overall issue). Perhaps if more people did that and revenue continued to decline, people might look more carefully at cutting expenses...granted that might be easier if your state were structured differently.

Not to worry. Toyota will bribe our "Im in it for the money" legislaturers and defeat the tax.

In fact I suspect the announcement of the "tax" is just to mo' money from Toyota. Just like the lawyers got for the "uncontrolled acceleration" scam.

Or Obama will put the IRS, NSA, and Eric Holder on them until they flee to Hong Kong.

The real question is: How can we Yaris owners get OUR piece of the Toyota apple?
