Parking Break and Gas Mistake - Toyota Yaris Forums

The other day I did a mistake, I had put on the parking break and accidentally tapped the gas, the car made quite a sound, this is the first time I have done something stupid like this; will there be any damage ?

No damage should come from that. When you hit the gas with the ebrake on the rear suspension is what makes the noise. If you went forward you were stretching the rear suspension and if you went in reverse you were compressing it. I do that all the time backing out of my garage. I automatically put the ebrake on whenever I park, but I seldom remember to release it before going.

No.

Through out history, many people have inadvertently (myself included) started driving with the parking brake engaged.

The worst that would come of it is premature wear of the rear shoes (if the ebrake is not tightened all the way and it slips), wearing a flat spot on your rear tires (if the ebrake is tight and the rear gets pulled along) or burning up the clutch or automatic transmission (you would have to really fight the ebrake for a while to do this).

You really can't hurt the rear suspension doing it, as the tires or brake shoes will break free before the suspension gets hurt.

In my case, I put the car in reverse, tap the gas, and don't move (but feel the car kid of squat a bit). Then, I release the ebrake and go on my way.

any idea on how to tighten the disk e brake on the 3rd gen besides tightening the liver?

I did it on purpose yesterday for snow drifting purposes. The Yaris is a good drift car ;)

You guys had me going with your abbreviation "e brake" which I now assume means "emergency brake." Before you laugh, keep in mind that many new cars now have "real" e-brakes, parking brakes that actuate electrically, not by pulling up a handle.
