Chain.

http://www.etimago.com/yaris/repairmanual/

Engine Mechanical - Caution: big PDF file. Valve clearance adjustment techniques start on page ten, which clearly shows the timing chain.

There is an automatic timing chain tensioner which maintains the proper tension (i.e. no tightening required). You should not have to touch it. It should be pratically "maintenance free" for the lifetime of the engine. Sure, there is a maximum chain stretch measurement that can be verified at defined intervals, but there should be other problems with the car by the time the chain needs replacing (at least in areas where salt is used as a de-icer on road surfaces in the winter).

From the Toyota website:

Seeing as how trini_per4mance (member) has not touched his in 305,000 miles, I'd say it should go the life of the car with no change or maintenance.

however his 300k+ miles are 95% or more from highway freeway driving. for regular drivers like ourselves, wouldn't there be a difference? just my guess

Ha, Toyota got us on the other end: the valves are non-adjustable, non-hydraulic, and the whole top end of the engine (cam box) will have to be torn down periodically to adjust any valve that is out of the clearance spec. I'll put up with some clacking rather than go through this $700- service befor 100K miles. BTW, timing chain tensioner are historically very troublesome. I like belts! Gee, why does a Lexus LS430 V8 have timing BELTS? Give me a couple strong belts!

As for triniperformance , like darkmoon said it is 95% highway driven therefore the stress of constant stop and go is not present thus the chain doesn't need to be adjusted at the specified interval.
actually guys, 65% of my driving is highway. the other 35% is city, stop and go.

Not in Toyota's... And why would you prefer an expensive belt service over nothing required?

A lot of toyota engines, as well as most imports, used to use belts. Not anymore... Even the new 4.0 V6 (4-runner and FJ) and the new 5.7 V8 (Tundra) now use chains. In fact almost every new engine Toyota has uses a chain. Hell, even our 2006 Civic 1.8 has a chain...

And that's belt, not belts...

CHAINS FTW

For Timing Chain and Gears, there are no prescribed replacement intervals; these components should be replaced as needed.

A Sample of one is not statistically relevant. I have 2 toyotas with chains - one only went 67K and the tesioner crapped out and the other is at 17K and still going (on REAL synthetic oil) Lesson learned with oil quality So with my sample size of 2 we are at a 50% failure rate

Oh sorry I'm an old subaru guy - we have 2 belts; one for each 2 cyl bank. I made the assumption that the toyota 4.7L v8 had 2 belts also.

My question to toyota designers, especially with the thinner oils utilised today wiith low EP adds, why no roller followers on the cam tappets (ala Mitsubishi) and why "non- adjustable without a extensive tear down? Gee I could easily adjust my 2.3L chevy vega inveted bucket tappet with a hex key and only remove the valve cover

When you do it you will have to remove somw other parts and have to regasket it yourself. Do you have experience with verifying timing chains and general mechanical engine maintenance past oil and plugs?

As a dealer tech working for autonation toyota, I have never and never seen anybody adjust or "reset and verify" timing chain tension. Leave them alone. If it ever rattle, which is 1 in a million, get it checked. But other than that, leave it alone.

^^^^^This. Trini, who happens to have an old post on this thread, has over 535,000 miles on the original engine in his Yaris and he hasn't had any timing chain issues.
