Question about HIGH Speeds

Hello I have a 2009 yaris 1.5 5speed manual.. I travel a lot between Phoenix and San Diego and I usually drive about 85-90 mph.. I notice the engine is roudy at this speed.. is it ok for the yaris to travel at these speeds or does it stress the engine?

Thanks in Advance!

That's rather slow, I'm used to 100...110, but that's close to the technical limit ;)
I would not worry too much if the oil is not too thin (depending on its specification AND how often you change it).

Lol that's fast. I just feel like this car needs another gear for lower rpm and cruising speed. It would make the engine quieter and offer more mpg at these speeds. It's not near as loud as the 4speed auto. Talk about engine noise...

I've noticed the rpms are at about 4k when im traveling this speed... That can't be good for the engine.. thats close to redline....

Redline is at around 6500rpm. 4000rpm is not even closed to redline.

As someone who pushed the stock engine to the limits I can tell you that you are fine rolling at 4k rpm even over 100 miles. I would avg 90mph for a 120 mile stretch up by me all the time. As previously said you just need to pay attention to the condition of your oil, coolant, and other things just like in all honesty you should if you always drove at 70mph. It could eventually cause additional wear I am sure, but you have to weigh what you are willing to deal with and why you go that fast. And yes, I would go those speeds even before being boosted....it would just take a lot longer to get there

Considering that it's a 5 hour drive of constant high rpm... No good..

I think it also is the way the engine was built.. Because i've driven a new lexus is250 at 90 mph and the RPM is about 2700.. so that is way less .. it still got 30 mpg too... where as my yaris at 90 is about 32mpg .

it doesn't have to do with the engine. it has to do with the gearing of the transmission. they are designed to still have you in the power band at higher speeds to a point so that you cam keep up/pass. You are only talking 90hp to the wheels stock.

it also depends on the terrain as well. if it is mostly flats or hilly too.

I drove my from Kentucky to Nevada in a straight shot (1750 miles) running 85 where I thought I could, 70 where I wasn't comfortable. Oh yeah, the car had 300,000 miles on it at the time. The motors in our cars is a great little motor!

If I remember correctly I was at highway speeds for about 28-30 hours straight. I only stopped for gas, fast food, and bathroom breaks. I had a case of Mountain Dews and someplace to be.... The Bonneville Salt Flats!

Oh i see... Btw... does the manual make more horsepower to the wheels than the automatic? I've driven both and the automatic feels about the same .... Im sure it is little difference.
Sorry for all the questions, I just recently got the yaris as a hand-me-down and im just so excited haha

I recall the 4-speed automatic actually having higher final gearing than the 5-speed manual. So, at 60 MPH, for example, the manual runs higher RPM's than the automatic (and may therefore be ever so slightly noisier). There have been a bunch of threads on this issue.

I think the automatic runs reasonably low RPM's at highway speed, and I don't find the engine terribly noisy. Of course, I seldom travel over 70 MPH.

That's interesting.. I've driven an auto and ithe engine was a bit louder... But it also had 150k miles on it so that may have been a factor too.

A. If you don't have the rear sway bar...you need it
B. In my 09 i would need ear plugs.

I drive 80-85 alot...but that's chicken feed compared to triple digits.

Does it also improve handling or is just for a quieter ride?

The ear plugs?

It makes it less twitchy and allows me to drive to the coast at 80-85 with one hand.

Its not like a regular sway bar (doesn't fasten to the car...only the suspension) but it really calms car down. I used tge $150 TRD one. There's others also. 10 minute install. No down side.
