That is a Mazda 2 with Toyota price tag ...not a true Yaris in anyway or Toyota for that matter.

Last week, someone on Instagram mentioned that the Mazda 2 is part of the "Toyota tech share". Not exactly sure what that means. Have been meaning to look into it.

But, the Mazda 2 is actually a very very good car, so it's not all bad!

Agreed. There are a lot worse cars they could have used.

I'm pretty neutral on it, but the front end is growing on me.

That Toyota front end design is hideous! Pity. The Mazda 2 front end is actually quite handsome.

One good thing about Toyota's Mazda 2 is a 6-speed automatic transmission rather than Toyota's miserable CVT.

The upcoming 2020 Yaris/iA/Mazda2 hatchback version pulls off the look a bit better (in XLE trim at least). Something about the sedan version just doesn't all mesh together well for some reason, and looks really weird from quite a few angles. Shame that they both use a straight-GDI engine design though. Oh, well.

I do wonder if one could swap over the 2's bumpers, quarterpanels and headlights...

I may have to get the new 2020 hatchback. I used to have a 2010 Yaris 5 speed I purchased new....the clutch constantly needed replaced so I traded it in. I've had a 2017 Yaris iA for 2 years - in fact 2 years ago today July 4th I bought a pulse red Yaris iA automatic. I couldn't be happier. I get 42 mpg in city driving, it's fun to drive, handles like a dream and it has never been in for any issues. Just oil changes and I did have to buy a new tire that was not repairable.

I like the fact that Mazda isn't using low-lifespan, random reliability push-belt CVT's like everyone else seems to be doing now to cut costs & increase profits, but the iA forums are rife with premature failures (among other things) of the Mazda 6-Spd automatic transmission. I like the look of the 2020 Yaris (Mazda2) hatch but those documented quality problems combined with a straight GDI engine design makes it a gamble prospect at best in terms of durability/reliably. So, if I decide to buy an automatic on my next car, I will likely track down an authentic Toyota designed/built 2018 Yaris SE hatch. If I stick with manuals, then it will still be something without a flawed, consumer-unfriendly straight GDI engine design.

Toyota owns part of Mazda, big deal. Carmakers are teaming up on low profit product segments. Toyota and Mazda are working on a 6 cyl performance motor, too.

2019 Yaris was listed as a "Top 10" by Consumer Reports, btw. https://www.aarp.org/auto/car-buying...best-cars.html

"The iA forums are rife with premature failures.." Where?
Went to https://www.scioniaforum.com/forum/9...cussion-forum/. Don't see any "rife" complaints.

BTW: There are not too many 2018 Yaris hatches for sale, since sales cratered for them. Toyota had to pull the plug

2020 Yaris will get Apple and Android's car programs.
