Squealing belt and chips on ac compressor pulley
Hi!
So I have a 2009 Yaris sedan. I replaced the belt a few months ago and it has been squealing at start up and it's sort of squeaky while it's being driven. It's not all the time though, but it's getting worse. I had it looked at and it was a bit loose so they tightened it and I'm still having the same issue. On another note the pulley on the AC compressor (I think it's the ac compressor from looking at diagrams) has bad chips in the pulley part of it (the part the belt is on) any idea why this would be? I don't know a ton about cars but I've never seen that before. So are these things related, is the car safe to drive, and what do I do about it? TIA!!! |

The compressor pulley chips might be from the belt thumping against it when the compressor kicked in with the belt loose. Once the belt is run loose it gets glazed and will continue to squeal.

I have good luck with Goodyear gator back belts. Very quiet. I can get to the bottom alternator bolt using a 14mm 1/4 drive socket attached to 3/8 to 1/4 adapter driven by a 3/8 gearwrench or Armstrong thin head ratchet. The 3/8 to 1/4 adaptet clears the alternator and the thin head ratchet fits between alternator and fender. The top bolt is a 12mm torqued to 14lb ft. Bottom 14mm is torqued to 40lb ft. To tension belt pry between alternator and motor mount. Do not pry on engine or you will ruin oil control valve.

Awesome thanks!
So if I'm understanding this right, I can replace the belt and ac compressor and if the belt has the right tension it shouldn't cause any issues? |

yes but not too tight or it will ruin bearings in pulleys. I marked w/ magic marker the original spot of top bolt the tensions pulley. Belt should push down about a 1/2 inch between crankshaft pulley and alternator pulley.
