2009 Yaris Replacement Key

Good afternoon everyone,

I recently purchased a used 2009 Yaris, which I absolutely adore. The dealership (which is still trying to swindle me out of $500 through fraudulent means, long story there) only gave me one key for the car. It is black and says Strattec on the keybase. I'm dreading a yes, but does this model and year require a special key to be made and programmed? And if so, what's the cheapest way to go about this? I refuse to go back to my dealership as I'm about to open a lawsuit on them, and I imagine most other dealerships will charge me $300+ for a key.

Thanks everyone!

For 2009 all US Yaris have transponder keys. Part number: 89785-60160

You can pick them up for under $10 from ebay, get them cut at your local HW store, and program them yourself, using the procedure on page EI-12 of the "Engine Immobilizer" section of the service manual (which you can download on the Micro Image Forum):

Greetings,

3 months back, I thought I lost my spare grey key. Had a locksmith come do a replacement and reset the entire immobiliser so the lost key, though can enter the car, would not be able to start the engine.

I recently found the spare key and I wanted to know if there's a way I can load and replace the immobiliser code back onto the lost key so I can get it to be functional again?

It's a 2010 yaris. Hope some expert here can help.

Thanks.

Take a look at that document. I believe that the only way to register keys with the immobilizer cleared is using the Toyota service tool.

Sorry if I misunderstood. Are you saying, I'll have to pop by a specialist?

Edit: No worries, I tried as you indicated. Works fine now. The old key seems to crank and start up the engine! But unlike the black key where inserted, the red lights goes off immediately. The old key once inserted, gives a 1-1.5sec solid red light before going off. I'm hoping this would not be an issue. Nevertheless, helped solve my issue enabling spare key to start up engine.

I think that is OK. It may just be an indicator of master versus slave keys.

I bought a tool off ebay that let me recode a used key I bought off ebay. I took off the transponder chip. Moved it into a flipout key body AND had a new blade for the key cut (for $2 at a local locksmith) Cost for the rekey tool $16. Used key ($30) with transponder and remote door controls. *note you only need the tool for the transponder. I was able to recode the door locks using the brake-open-close-door-dance

Total cost was like $50 (thats also with the aftermarket folding key body)

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Toyota-Lexus-...item4ab4ec4b77

I also bought a $4 bluetooth OBD II code reader to check my own engine codes.

the dealership wanted $240 plus 1 hour for reprograming plus $25 to cut the key... so like almost $400 with tax

Some reason I am unable to get my 09 into key-relearn mode. I've been following the Mitchell instructions (which often are crap), which is the same as the 07 (old key in, remove and insert 4 more times, door 6 times, remove old key and insert new). Old key is black so I assume it's the master, but maybe not. I was only given one key, and do not know history.

Rcvmini, I am in Langley so if I can't make this work, maybe we can work something out?

Cheers.
Cory

Hey Cory,

The rekey tool i got from ebay will allow you to set a new master I'm in Coquitlam by the iKea so if you cant figure it out I might be able to help.

Just to be clear the ReKey tool only reprograms the transponder chip. The fob controls for your auto locks etc need be done with the key-in key out door dance and have NOTHING to do with the transponder chip that lets you start the car.

In simple terms the key in key out and open and close door dance will let you reprogram auto lock and unlock on a key fob but will NOT let you reprogram a used or new key that isn't alredy set you your car.

Thats where the rekey tool from ebay comes in. With that you don't need to play the dealer a bajillion-dollers to recode the transponder.

I think I would cry if I lost one of my over-sized, overpriced keys.

I'd thought the door dance was to relearn the key chip (not the fob). I don't have remote locks so only need the key.

It's odd because they say:

"The key has 2 codes: the key code (immobiliser code) and
the wireless code (recognition code)."

and "New key code registration (Without using intelligent
tester)" and then the door dance.

Either way if you have a setup that works, may as well give it a shot. I'll PM you in a few weeks when I have more time and we will give it a shot.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers.
