Drilled stock airbox

I was cleaning out the garage and found a second stock airbox configuration that I forgot I had. I was thinking about the airbox mod that's been here on the forum for a long time and figured, why not? So ended up drilling nickle sized holes in 3-5 lines all the way around the lower box. Needless to say, I wish I would have done this a long time ago, reminds me of the growl and sound the AFE intake gave me but obviously as a much lower price. That's not to say the AFE or any other intake is a bad thing, they look much nicer than a stock airbox. But if you're on a budget, it's a mod that's worth looking into

I'd like to give ChinoCharles credit for this one. It's his thread that gave me the idea to go ahead and make it happen.

You should remove the carbon trap so you might make use of the additional available flow

Thanks for the tip! Any effect on the MAF sensor though? So far I don't really see any change in MPGs or anything like that, just much louder (and nicer sounding!) under acceleration.

Removing that wont effect the MAF sensor.

I did this exact same thing when I first had my Yaris in 2007. Adds a nice sound.

I'm bored and have the day off... so what size drill bit are we using, and we're drilling below the panel correct?

that should make for some cool sound ...if u can post sound with intake running that would be fantastic .

One question ...what style air cone makes most sound open or closed end ?

At lower rpms with hard acceleration, it kind of reminds me of a boxer engine from a Subaru WRX. At higher rpm hard acceleration, reminds me of some Honda VTEC hah.

I'm using a high flow air filter as well.

I didnt drill any holes in the box. What I had done is took out the tube from the lower air cleaner box and put a K&N drop in filter. Sounds deep and once the VVTi active is screming.

I've had the "elephant trunk" tube off for a long time...it does add a deeper sound. Once the holes are added, it's MUCH deeper than that.

Not to burst your bubble guys, but with summer right around the corner aren't you worried about all that under hood heat getting sucked into your airbox?

I live in Puerto Rico and the car hasn't broken down and I don't have the tube.

Oh no, I wasn't saying it would break down. It will run fine, it's just that the cooler the air is entering your intake the better the car will perform.
