Is it safe to change from synthetic oil to regular oil

Hi Yrais Gurus,

I have got my yaris since Feb 2008, and did not use it that much due to my frequent travels. The car has about 9000 Miles and I always use "Mobil 1" synthetic oil since I owned it. During this mileage I have changed oil 3 times as it exceeds the permitted period (not more than 6 month or 6000 miles).

Now, I think to switch to regular oil (Mobil XHP) as it cheaper and more close to my car usage.

I have asked the dealer's maintenance workshop and they told me it will be Ok, and I can switch back to synthetic oil once I need to .

I still have some worries about this switch...Could you help me with your opinions and personal experience?

Thanks in advance.

There will be no problems switching from Synthetic back to conventional oil then in the future switching back to synthetic..I've never heard of a 6000 mile or 6 month change schedule, our owners manual gives a 7500 mile change interval but doesnt specify time.
Personally i change my oil every 10,000 kilometers or once a year whatever comes first and use Mobil1 synthetic

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. Actually, the info I have provided about oil change duration limitation is gained from my Yaris owner's manual.

My Yaris is 1.3 L Sedan, if you want I can capture the relevant pages and attach it here.

Thanks again for your precious info.

it's fine . There are semi-synthetic motor oils . So , they're compatible .

stay with Mobil1 synthetic motor oil, you don't put that many miles on your car and going over in months is no big deal......and, yes I do what I suggest.

Later,
Al

i was using synthetic in my car and took it to the toyota dealer i bought it from for my free inspection. 30 mins and 1 test driven mini cooper later this kid comes out and goes "hey, did you know you're car is up for an inspection too?" apparently they decided to throw off my normal oil change schedule by 3000 miles and waste my money by putting in regular oil. i drove it and switched back to synthetic for my next oil change and my car hasn't had a problem. i can't see it being a big deal.

Sounds like your friend needs to sue the oil co. and get himself some money.

I switch back and forth depending on how much money I wanna spend at the time. It hasn't caused me any problems and I really don't notice any difference in fuel economy or anything else. I always prefer synthetic though.

An engine throwing a rod is pretty unlikely to be an oil related problem.

+1 (and if it is the oil is probably "absent" or severely fuel diluted.)

After an engine failure on an R6 the last thing I would suspect is the oil from any reputable company. The oil is often blamed but almost never the cause.

I was told by my toyota dealership that once i switch over i cannot go back. I see a small difference in MPG with the synthetic, but I went with synthetic for the simple fact that i dont drive often, and the small trips i take break down regular oil faster.

Its cause the dealership dosnt want to switch back making less money so they want you to keep buying the expensive oil change.

I have had my Yaris for about 28 months now with almost 80,000 miles. Since I drive about 140 miles a day round trip to work, I have wondered if changing to synthetic oil would lessen the frequency I have to change my oil. I change it about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles depending on when I can get to changing it.

Any thoughts?

By the way, I have the manual hatchback and get 41 miles to the gallon, which is totally awesome.

The way some get all worried about their oil changes you'd think that their Yaris has to last a lifetime Its an inexpensive economy car, change the oil every 10k with a quality synthetic and in 5-6 years trade the car in for something else
