You can get a kit at Sears for $20. FWIW, taking everything out of the back - spare, seats, cargo hatch, etc. lops off over 100lbs. |

Yeah, wheels are next for me. You'd have to really hunt to knock 40lbs off the stock setup though. Not sure what the tires weight, but the rims are 17lbs. Even with the 11lb wheels I'm getting, that's only 24lbs. Tires will come once I blow through the first set.
Here's the weights for everything: Back Seat & Belts - 50lbs Spare Tire - 22lbs Deck Lid, Plastic Containers, Spare Kit, Cover - 21lbs Okay, so I suck at math. Almost 100lbs. :P If you're wondering, the jack isn't in the back, it's under the front seat. Last edited by Idjiit; 03-31-2006 at 02:47 PM. |

get rota slipstreams in 17" they are still pretty light and cheap.
or like some 16x8 slipstreams and maybe get flares to fit them haha I bet that would handle crazy well depending on the offset |

I'm going to get Volk TE37's at 14x5. Chances are they weigh less than 8lbs each. I have to believe they can handle hitting an occasional pothole. Anyone offhand know the lightest aftermarket seats? I'm going to have to do a lot of research to find that out. |

I made seats back in the day for my 323 gtx for autocross out of fiberglass and they were 8lbs a piece with padding. strong enough to hold 200lbs also. Pretty easy to make also but I wouldn't daily drive with them. |

the seats that are reclineable are about double the weight of those that are fixed, you can actually find on ebay reclineables that range from 15-19lbs
the fixed ones you can find from 6lbs-12lbs but of course the lighter you go, usually the more money they will run you save yourself some dough and get some cheaper seats, put a few hundred towards the motor |

Since it will be my daily driver, they do need to be comfortable. I'd try fixed ones first just to see, but I'd prolly need a reclinable one for the passengers seat anyways. I'd prolly want to trying them out first though. That'll be the tough part. Of course, even when I'm in perfect health 200lbs weight maximum wouldn't be enough. |

smaller wheels mean more tire, IMO tires are heavier than wheels, so 15lbs wheels & 10lbs tires, would be better than 8lbs wheels & 25lbs tires. plus I like the look & the stiffness, they can accommodate larger brakes too.

Here is a good guide by Tirerack.com For real proof that smaller tires weigh less here is a list of tire weights from Toyo tires. In every case, the 14" wheels weigh less than the larger wheels. |

I see what you are saying, but I'm comparing a 70-series against a 45-series, the 45-series will weigh less, since the overall diameter is the same there is less rubber thus less weight.
http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=18 - 205/45/17 are about 20 lbs for toyos

guys, dont go crazy with tire weights, the wheel weight is more important
if you want lighter tires, just go with a thinner tire if you go with wider tires, they will weigh more of course but you will notice a huge performance gain on the turns, I used to switch back and forth in the scion from 225 tires to my 185 snow tires, huge difference on the turns, you wouldnt even believe im going to go with a set of 225 on my 15's, once the car is dropped, should be nice around the turns I hear toyo proxes are probably the lightest tires if you comparing the same sizes, check them out |

You have to also realize that snow tires are simply not meant for dry handling.
All weight is important. And since the tires are on the outside of the wheel, the weight of the tire is prolly more important. I've heard anywhere from 4 lbs and up of tire weight is equal to 1 lb of weight above the suspension. The other thing that has to be considered is how you are going to drive the car. If I was going to autocross the car I'd get 17" tires, because I'd want the absolute best I could buy. However, since it is going to be my daily driver, I have no need for super expensive tires that have limits that are impossible to hit while doing anything below 100 mph. Because of this, I can do everything possible to minimize the weight everywhere. The tires DJ_SpaRky is looking at weigh about 20 lbs. The tires I am looking at weigh 16 lbs. At first glance that is only 16 lbs. However, if you buy into the theory that tire weight equals 4 times suspended weight, it has the same impact as 64 lbs of weight above the suspension. Add that to wheel weight, where the stock wheels weigh 17lbs each, and the TE37's I'll mount weigh less then 8 lbs, and you have some serious weight loss. It really all depends on how you are going to use the vehicle. |
