Manual tranny Yaris
I might have a chance to buy a manual transmission 2010 Yaris. Before I do so, anything I should know about any potential problems with this type of transmission in the Yaris? How do those who have the manual transmission in the Yaris like it? If I do this, I'll be passing my current Yaris onto my nephew and keeping this one for myself.
Thanks. |

uh..it's pretty okay. i haven't had issues. i got mine at 60,xxx miles, changed the oil with royal purple 75w-90. that was...2 years ago (?) i'm at 100,270 today. still feels the same as when i changed it. i will probably change it again soon with something formulated for MT, or redline 75w-90.
the only issue i have is getting into 1st gear wile rolling, like in traffic; slowing for a red light that turns green and i'm at like 6 or 7 mph. it does not want to go into first and i have to start in 2nd all slow... or it grinds into 1st. i think there might be a clutch issue though. it might be super worn, and there might be a bubble in the line. to my knowledge it is the original clutch... |

I have a 2010, currently sitting at 190,000 miles with original clutch and everything. I wouldn't hesitate.

manual yarii are solid. its a 2400lb car....you REALLY have to hamfist it to break it.
i never broke mine and i was boosted and i used to auto-x and lap it. my echo has 240k miles on it and its fine, too

Toyota Yaris stiff shift first gear bleed double clutch synchro
My 145k mile 2007 is so stiff into a slow rolling shift to first that I consider this to be an obstacle to the car being a good rock crawler. (Low front bumper cover is another.) It would be entering a slow steep climbing section for the 2-1 shift, and the car would be stopped by the time a double-clutch was finished!
It isn't the clutch. They do engage down near the stop, but I got a bit of height and some gritty brake fluid by bleeding when I first got the car. Test drive before buying to find grinds, stiffness and/or clinks in all the 2 through 5 upshifts and downshifts. |

My '09 with ~120k miles does not have any issues if I get a rolling start into 1st (in fact, I downshifted into 1st while climbing up a hill the other day.) I don't think the clutch has ever been replaced, because the previous owners said they bought it with 20k miles.
The one weird thing is it feels like it grabs twice and slows down really fast in 1st and 2nd when I let off the gas. I'm thinking this is because of the decelerative fuel cutoff. Does anyone else experience this? It's kind of inconveniently jerky when I'm trying to coast along in traffic at 2-3mph with the clutch out and giving the gas light taps. EDIT: it also has no tach which is a bit challenging because it's my first manual car. I'm surviving though. |

I think mine may have some of that jerk in throttle transitions from driving to engine braking in first gear. Could be in part due to naturally soft engine mounts and worn mounts. I still get some chatter starting in reverse sometimes.

For your average commuter that doesn't push it to the limits and understands how to shift, it's rock solid. I've been beating on mine for the last 5+ years, went boosted and now have the 1.8L swapped in. No mechanical issues to report from the gearbox.

You have to rev match to first. I have no problem getting into first in mine.

Manual transmission is the norm in the UK and Europe. First time i drove an auto was a hire car in Canada when i was 23.
I've been driving my 5 speed Yaris for 7 years, i changed the clutch last year at 130,000 (i think) miles although the clutch had been abused a little. Only thing i notice is sometimes it takes 2 attempts to get into reverse sometimes, like the syncros are not quite grabbing. Normally clutching again and it will go in. Same every now and again where it won't go in first. I've seen other Toyota gearboxes behave the same way. Normally clutching again it will go in fine. I've actually driven a Corolla that suffered a catastrophic failure of 3rd/4th and reverse gear for a week and i managed with driving that around. I'd never want to drive an automatic. Currently running a "rot gut" 75w90 semi synthetic GL4 gearbox oil made by Comma in my gearbox and it seems fine.

Reverse doesn’t have syncros . Sometimes you need to double clutch in order for things to line up to get it into reverse.

It's normal for a m/t car to "buck" in first gear. If you want to roll in traffic in 1st then you'll have to press the clutch pedal

When you all say "double clutch into reverse", do you mean after going forward and stopping, or just any time you put it into reverse? Do you rev it? My Yaris crunches into reverse about 75% of the time regardless of whether I just started the car and back out of a parking space, or go from 1st to R to parallel park. I'm also trying to work on making sure the revs are right when shifting, but it's hard to know where I'm supposed to be without a tach. |

These stiff-when-rolling first gears in the 5-speed manual--did anyone have one like that when the car was brand new? Did anyone have one where the rolling 2-1 shift-shifting got easier over time/miles?

Also, it's fun....and you can combine it with heel-toeing and put on some eurobeat and go to down like Takumi Fujiwara. |
