2009 Yaris, Too Much Oil....Help
Hi all,
Today is my first time doing oil change by myself. It took me a long time as the manual image doesn't match to my yaris bottom. Long story short. I follow an online instruction to start filling with 3 quarter and then turn on my engine for 2 mins. After that, check the dipstick. Due to my lack of experience enough, every time reading the dipstick I can only see oil at the tip. Hence, I fill it up to 4 and a half bottle of quarter size bottle. I feel weird since it seems oil is still at the tip of dipstick. I looked at the manual and found out that engine plus oil filter, it's about 3.9 quarter to get full. That means I filled half quarter extra....Does it cause any damage? How can I slowly drain / pump some oil out if necessary? Thanks, Ricky |

Just leave it alone. You are perfectly ok and within the range. I don't think it will cause any damage at all. I change my oil all the time and I fill it up with up to 5 quarts and I change it every 10K miles and I haven't seen any problem. I haven't notice any smoke or hydrlocking at all. Honestly, as long as you don't notice any smoke or leakage coming out I would leave it alone. Then when your next oil change is due fill her up to the proper amount of your choice.

Yup your fine any car can handle up to twenty percent overfill without any issues more than that can cause excessive oil pressure and can cause a oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket leak if driven with excessive oil for months

Yea, as stated, you are fine. Anyone who has changed their own oil has made a similar mistake. You will know next time!

BTW, will oil being burned during driving? I never add oil between oil change interval. If it burn, then my current overfill would get better later? Because I am so close to boundary of 20% ... want to know a bit more about the thing. If it does burn, how often should I check the oil level ? (Didn't check in the past hurt my engine?)

It shouldn't be, the oil should be sealed by oil ring on piston. Unless that get worn out and oil can get into combustion chamber, and by then you have a bigger problem than overfilling.

A problem can arise if you overfill it so much that the 'bottom" of the crank dips in the oil as it spins causing the oil to foam effecting oil pressure and its ability to protect etc . If after some high revving and/or prolonged highway driving, etc you do not notice any hint of foam on your dip stick, you are OK . A half quart over is usually just fine. BTW, this is why some engines call for an odd amount of oil. The spec published for oil amount has been adjusted to allow for some overfilling Last edited by RedRide; 05-23-2013 at 05:03 PM. |
