My first noise

Hey guys. I finally drove my Yaris hard enough to produce some sort of unpleasant noise. It sounds like it's coming from the belt/pulley (passenger side) of the engine. It may even be inside of the engine itself (maybe loose valves or failing timing chain). I just thought I'd throw a video up of the noise to see if anyone recognizes it or could diagnose it by just a sound a brief description. Here is the video I've made of it:

Additional info:
* not throwing any codes (I checked with my scangauge)
* 75k miles, mainly highway miles
* automatic tranny
* I drive it pretty hard
* Only maintenance done has been oil changes, tires, and air filters
* Mods: groundwire kit, K&N air filter & modded intake box (drilled holes in it and removed silencer tube), rear sway bar

My guess is the water pump. I wish I could tell you what it was for sure, but it doesn't sound good.

My only piece of advice is to stop doing this -> * I drive it pretty hard

I want to agree with you on the water pump because it seems like a common issue for the Yaris and it's coming from that general area of the engine bay. However... shouldn't I see the engine running a little hot if it's the water pump? The scangauge has been showing pretty consistent temps between 181 and 186 since I bought the scangauge four months ago. Any input is appreciated.

As long as it's still pumping, the engine won't run hot....even if it's making noise.

Thanks. I'll hold off on driving it until I make the short trip to have it looked at and/or replaced.

Thanks for the video. Hearing that noise might come in handy some day.

Not sure if you've solved your problem, but I had exactly the same noise coming from the same part of my engine bay. Took it into my dealer and they said it was the water pump. Got it replaced and picked it up an hour ago, and the sound is gone 8)

I replaced the water pump and one of the noises went away, but another noise remains. My trusted mechanic says it's the bearings in the alternator (another $550-600 of repairs). It's strange that both of the noises started up during the same few weeks. Thanks for the help guys.
