Another Loss of MPG Thread...

Hey there guys,

Been awhile since I posted. I got my 2010 Toyota Yaris 5 door at the tail end of November 2013. I was getting (If I remember correctly) anywhere from 28 to 30 MPG. I just did my mileage the last 2 fillups and was SHOCKED (and a bit upset) that I'm only getting 24-25 MPG now. My oil changes have been caught up, and I just hit 91k so I'm getting ready for the 90k service, but is this normal? Would it be the 90k service that may be dropping my MPG? In 5 months of ownership, it has dropped from the 28-30 I loved, to 24-25 on average and I haven't changed my driving habits at all.

A bad o2 sensor will make it run rich and kill fuel economy - one went in my last car, and fuel usage went up by 30 percent. Even though it *should* throw a CEL, I'd get the mechanics to look in to it anyway. Otherwise maybe friction on the drivetrain somewhere, stuck brake etc?

Yes, a 90k tune up can and will help. Yet, not that youre a bad driver but just check if you are making easy mistakes. No jack rabbit starts, shift (manual Trans) at 2500 rpm.If you have a auto trans, change the fluid. Keep your speed down. Don't carry "junk" in the car. Trust me look at my signature gas mileage.

I am SO jealous of that MPG in your sig Killchain...

It is an automatic so I'll be changing the fluid when I do this 90k maintenance in the next week or two. I feel that I don't do the jack rabbit starts and such, but will definitely look into it.

No CEL, but I'll check into the O2 Sensor as well. Thank you!

I'm kinda in the same situation with my Echo now. I thought it was mine worn set of standard plugs so put in a new set of NGK iridium plugs and although the engine runs smoother, I did not gain any MPGs. I did a long trip to Florida and back and was getting horrendous millage for all freeway driving. I think my average going there was around 32MPG US. When I got there I noticed the clean stainless exhaust tips on my Borla axle back were as black as could be. So the engine is running pig rich.

I'm thinking my O2 sensor is on it's way out as even as I got into the warm weather in lower states it was still using as much gas as in the freezing temps all winter.

Transmission fluid makes a big deal. So does having a super light touch when accelerating. Air pressure of the tires can hurt too.

Are you at sea level or in the mountains?

I can agree with why?'s suggestion about tire pressure. I run mine with around 37 PSI. My Yaris has not reached your total mileage as yet, but I know I have seen an increase in fuel economy with higher tire inflation. It can be something to consider.
