Looks like our Yaris didn't do too well in the crash test.

SIDE impact tests with NO side airbags

you guys in US can buy the package with side curtain & airbags. here in Canada it's not even offered for the HB. Some other places even got knee airbags

With side-impact airbags, both the Fit and the Yaris did well.

We are lucky enough to have 'em.

Yep, was just gonna post on the higher marks. Looks like w/ side air the Yaris is getting results similar to the Euro tests. :)

The steering is placed too far from the driver. At he moment the driver's head hits the airbag, the airbag already had started do deflate and offers low protection: the head hits on the steering wheel through the airbag. That's why the Yaris has a telescopic steering wheel in Europe and Australia... but not in North America ??

"The bent steering wheel is evidence of a hard hit of the dummy's head through the airbag during the crash." - IIHS

I'm pissed now! I ordered my Yaris with side airbags, and it arrived with none. I bitched about it to the manager, but I wanted my Yaris. UGH! I work in an area with lots of blind turns and side airbags would make me feel a little more secure. I am not doing any upgrades to my Yaris because as soon as the 5 door comes to the states with side airbags, I will be trading mine in.

I wish I could have found one with side air bags but somehow, after driving defensively for almost 30 years, I'm still alive.

The way I see it I lucked out finding my Yaris w/pwr pkg in Maryland 5 hours away, if I would have incisted on the side airbags I would still be waiting.

What I saw on TV said it came in second to the Versus in small car safety. That doesn't sound to bad to me.

How do you have a car retrofitted with Side Airbags?

Does your defensive driving techniques involve slowing down on a green light before you enter an intersection to ensure that no police chases or red light runners are going to T-bone you?
If not, then you've been very lucky thus far.

Yeah, after checking on prices around the country where I have friends and family (New York, Minnesota, and Oklahoma), I found that side air was indeed hard to find and more than likely a factory order. For whatever reason Southeast Toyota doesn't have the A, B, and C packages that I've seen elsewhere. There are some basic configurations that are pretty common, but also some vehicles that come a bit more a la carté, which means the side air is easier to find. :)

I do actually look both ways - even on a green light. Side bags area fairly recent innovation. I wish I could have gotten them, but I hardly feel like a sitting duck without them.

an SUV would need sniper-like precision to hit you. that yaris liftback is the smallest car i've seen on the road since the daihatsu charade!! and i agree, you aren't a sitting duck. you're more like that ridiculously fast duck that no one can seem to kill on "duck hunt." ahhhh, i miss that game...
