My New (Used) Dash and Cluster Surround!

My '06 RS will finally get its new dash. I can't find a mark on this one or on the cluster surround - maybe a few small dogs hairs from carrying it in my van . The one that came in the car when I bought it was really badly scratched, more like gouged. A previous owner must have carried something long with very sharp ends that cut quite deeply into the dash. Plus, one of the passenger side glove box hinges was broken and the box wouldn't close tight.

There is one issue however that I discovered when picking it up. One of the small tabs that holds the bottom of the passenger side cup holder on snapped off. It closes tightly and in perfect alignment, but when opened, wiggles about. I'll use the cup holder from my current dash or fix the missing pin. Still have to figure out how to remove the cup holder. Had a quick look but was unsuccessful removing it. Up for guidance if anyone has experience. A very minor inconvenience, but well worth it. The guy at the scrap yard gave me what I consider a pretty good deal considering prices I was quoted elsewhere. He basically threw in the cluster and both upper glove boxes. I paid $150.00 CAD.

I will be bringing the car in for 5 recalls in a few weeks, one of which is the passenger side airbag. I'm hoping to strike a deal with Toyota whereby they put my new dash in for a decent price. If they are going to charge me a lot, I will do it myself.

If I do the job, I will try to document it with pics etc.

Seeing as how they have to take it all out anyway, I'd use the assumptive close technique and simply tell them to put the new one back in instead of the old one. If they balk, then see what they want to do it.

I am hoping that they have to remove the full dash but couldn't find any info on that online. When I spoke to one dealer, they said that they just do it through the glovebox but the counter guy didn't seem to know much about it.

I like your recommended approach and will attempt it.

I know for a fact that when mine was done they had removed the radio and HVAC trim. That indicates to me full dash removal which is what early indicators said would be involved.

Awesome! Well, when I take the car in, I'll direct them to the new dash.

Thanks!

Well, at least one dealership - about 100 km from me - says they remove the whole dash to replace the airbag. I asked if I brought my new dash to them if they would replace it free of charge and they said yes. I'll try to get my more 'local' dealer to offer to do the same.
