key wont turn out of lock position

hey guys i need some major help. so we went to get a duplicate key at ace hardware (as told my the dealership), and ace hardware said there was no chip in the key. so we got one made it opened the door but wouldnt start. we tried the actual toyota key and that locked, but then worked a couple seconds later. we took the spare key back and tried the toyota key but it locked and its been locked for the last hour. we tried wiggling the wheel and turning it and now the wheel is locked in place.

any suggestions please

turn your steering wheel all the way to the left or right then turn the key out....you must have locked it..

Now that's going to be tough since OP has indicated steering wheel will no longer move.

Got me stumped.

I talked to a few people and it seems like its the ignition starter lock. I blame ace hardware and their cheap ass replacement keys

With it locked, it will be able to turn a tiny bit in one direction (and in the other it will hit the hard stop). Hold it off the hard stop, in the direction with the small amount of play, push the key in and try to turn it.

holy hell, we figured out what was wrong and i still blame ace hardware.

what happened was the actual key was so worn down that when they copied it, they must of tweaked the actual toyota key just enough to not make it work. so toyota made a new key at the dealership and it worked like a charm. dealership didnt charge us anything for new keys since we just bought the car yesterday.

shoutout to all: get new keys every 100k miles haha

It was a bad sequence of events.
Worn key, along with worn ignition lock
No need to put blame on anyone. Nor get upset.

All ended up well.

Keep an eye on the lock, it might go next. The tumblers wear too.

Enjoy your car!!

Why didnt you use your spare key?
Let me guess you are one of many out there that buy a used car from a dealer or private owner that sold you the car with one worned out key..

you got off lucky seen people with only one "chip key" and they never make time to make a duplicate till they lose it somewhere and gotta tow the car into dealership

Please try to post your threads in the correct thread section. It's getting old moving all the stuff from the "general discussion" when this was clearly service related. I've moved it to the correct section.
