smoked taillights

I was wondering what the process is for "smoking out" or darkening the taillihgts on the hatchback model. Is it legal? Expensive? reversable if one decides to take it off? is it spray painting your lights or film?

I think it depends where you live. Here in texas it isnt because "your reflectors on the lights themselves have to be able to work in case your tail lights go out" -cop...
Thats exactly what he told me

VHT Nite Shades.....it's basically a tinting spray for tail lights and what not. Same stuff as VANS but it's a lil cheaper at like 10 bux a can. It's perfectly legal most places and I think (don't qoute me) to take it off you just sand it off

I used vht, wasn't overly impressed, but that just could have been my work. I spent an hour scrubbing a headlights with finger nail polish remover after wanting to redo it. Not fun.

I've done it before, it fades and looks like crap within a few months.

The only way I'd ever go for smoked lenses is if my car was white, even then I'd steer clear unless I could buy actual smoked lenses, I wouldn't use that tint stuff.

Someone should get on avs or another company to make smoked or clear covers, with clear you coulf paint them body color or something, and just pop them off at night. (headlights)

For tails, smoked covers(plastic) are best, but not available for yaris. Otherwise people use tint spray or window film.

Garm, think you could try your hand at some plastic covers? Id love a set for my heads and tails.

Also, I did my trucks tails with spray tint, held up two years now, never faded. If you use tire wet it shines them up like new, old car show trick.

It's illegal no matter where you go, some cops in some states are more lenient than others. There is always a law on the book about "obscuring headlamps" or tail lamps.

On the other hand I have tinted all of the lamps on my last few vehicles. I started with VHT night shades and clear coat, but now I take them to a buddy that works at a bodyshop. My buddy uses clearcoat and mixes in a tint color. After the desired darkness is created on the lamp, he then hits it with a couple more coats of regular clear for durability. He does this all for $50 per pair of lamps :)

^^^ I don't necessarily agree with that top statement...I've been pulled over more than 10 times in my GTO (which I'm not proud of btw) in all different cities and my car is completely blacked out and not once has any of those cops ever mentioned a thing about it....

Just buy the pre-cut vinyl from ebay. Works like a charm and is pretty cheap (about 10 bucks or so) and it doesn't fade or look matted. I've had it on my GTO head/fog/tail lights for years and it still looks as good as the day I got it.

I wouldn't waste your time spraying it unless you really know what your doing. Plus if you don't like the vinyl you can just take it off with no harm done to the lights

Either find new lights that are tinted or use vinyl, any spray stuff is temporary.
