Skyactiv engines are direct injection. Might want to look at adding an oil catch can to prevent build up in the intake valves.

To me the IA/2 is just a money maker for toyota, people will buy the toyota nameplate but toyota corporate trusts mazda's engine design and in the end the general populus feels good, both companies are being paid, and both toyota and mazda can shit out their beloved "car enthusiast" stylized cars
also their RX cars where phenomenal ;) I owned a few haha |

Bronsin , make sure your son in law uses a Top Tier gasoline for the Yaris Ia at all fillups . It's highly recommended for D.I engines . Here's a list of Top Tier gasolines . https://www.toptiergas.com/licensedbrands/ . The use of TOP TIER gasoline is likely in the owner manual . Have him look it up . Its stated in the '11 FIT owner manual ( below ) . The FIT is E.F.I. .

in my area we have a lot of MurphyUSA stations(walmart pumps) and i personally use Kroger fuel(grocery store) due to the points i get from shopping there saving me $ on gas.
somebody a long time ago told me all gas was the same and they get them from the same refineries. i know BP adds 'invogorate' and Shell i'm sure does something because it's always the most expensive. sorry to get off topic on my fuel statements! |

Shouldn't Mazda (& others) be doing that from a design & factory-build standpoint? It should be standard equipment for straight GDI engine designs, if they care anything about building a reliable, trouble-free engine that stands the test of time.
