Exclamation Rusty Muffler Hangers

Im guessing that these parts are the muffler handlers? I have never really looked under any of my cars (at least not the back part).

Today, I was installing those plugs that are commonly not installed pre-inspection before sale? It took me 30k miles to finally put them in....

anyways, I was down there and noticed a terrible rust problem with the muffler, The metal parts that hold the muffler and exhaust up to the body of the car have become very rusted and the rust seems to have begun to spread to the actual muffler. The rust isnt just surface rust either, I presume this because simply touching the metal results in the metal flaking off.

I saw that there was a previous post about the same problem, maybe other have the same problem but their post was deleted in the hack?

Here are some not so good pictures, damn flash!

Reckon I should take it into the shop under warranty??

ps: I was previously "BayouYari" but unfortunately I re-registered for that name and it didnt send me a confirmation email so then i requested for the password to be changed and then I tried to log in but it needed to be activated??? If a MOD reads this, I'd love to have my old name back ....

You know, I noticed the same thing in my car, I wasn't really sure if it'd be convered under the warranty. Mine looks almost just as bad but I thought that was really weird since its a new car. Shouldn't be so rusted.

I'm disappointed. My Tercel didn't look that bad, and it's a 92!

Ah well.

Even mine was beginning to look like that when I removed it from my car to install my new exhaust. And my car's about 4 months old.

After seeing your pics I took a look at my exhaust. It's just at the starting phase of the rust. I can see small brown spots around the welds and at the bends. I don't think it would've killed Toyota to throw on some kind of heat-resistant clear-coat finish at the time of assembly, even if this model does count as an economy car. Seeing that warranty doesn't cover it, looks like I got a paint project this weekend. ..Just great...

New car, rusted quickly. Remember how much toyota paid out on the rusted frames of the tacoma pick ups? Not sure what that was caused by, inferior metal or something.
this rust on the exhaust should not be happening so fast. If enough people here at Yaris world are noticing the same, perhaps a group could get together with a petition about this. Push toyota to cover it if car is under warranty.

Mine started to rust also, being that the muffler is stainless except for the hangers I polished it until it was replaced with the Thunder exhaust. On the hangers I just sanded the rust to smooth and put a coat of black rustoleum on them. No problems since. In addition, when cleaning the underside I pull the muffler to clean the rubber hangers and then treat them with 303 or Meguiars rubber lubricant. Keeps them black and supple. Friends said they could spot my car from the rear a mile away as the muffler was so shiny.

Try using "por15" If you google it you can find it or maybe at your local auto zone or something. It totally stops rust and prevents any further rust from starting. It is very expensive for a small can, but lasts. My husband used it on his truck and worked great.

I agree with Forrest, next to powdercoating POR 15 is ideal. It is extremely expensive. If you elect to get or use it be sure to get the POR solvent. You'll wish you did. For just the hangers though, brushed on rustoleum (cheap) and easily obtainable would do ya.
