Exclamation Gear Pops /slips/ jumps out to neutral

Hello Guys,
I had a problem yesterday while i was going on dual carriageway @50-60mph
when my fifth gear pops out to neutral. I pressed the clutch and engaged it again. And again after couple of mins it pops out again. And then i engaged it again and it did not pops out.
I had earlier an issue week or 2 before when my 4th gear was popping out to neutral. and it was maily duing city driving. And i thought it could be due to gear oil not being hot enough. As the Blue engine light was still on.

there are few links i found about the issue:
http://www.wcengineering.com/articles/popout.html
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_would_...ip_out_of_gear
as these are more general ones not specific to yaris so

I just want to know if any yaris owner had this issue before and what was the reason, or how did they sort that out.
Cheers

The first link you posted pretty much covers it. Start by checking the linkage. Have someone in the car shift the linkage through the gears (with engine off). Have them put it in 5th, then try to move the shift lever on the transmission further. If you can, then it's likely the linkage is worn and you are not getting it all the way into 5th.

If it is internal, chances are it is best to just drive the car until it breaks or won't stay in gear. Then replace the entire trans with a used one. If you have a friend who can rebuild transmissions, it might be worthwhile but otherwise replacing is going the be most cost effective.

I have never heard of a Yaris doing this, but it can happen to anything.
Cheers.

When I was a VW mechanic in the 70s popping out of gear meant your transmission needed rebuilding....

Hello Guys,
I noticed that there is a open vent on the transmission mount that shows some oil drops !! and also there is some oil splashes on the plastic under the radiator just infront of tranny. could be from the same vent. is that a problem?
Also some people mentioned on internet to check the tranny oil level:

http://www.autos.com/car-maintenance...-how-to-fix-it

So how to check the tranny oil level (there is no dipstick!!!!)

Thanks

There are two plugs on the trans one lower for draining one mid way up for filling, the fluid has to be just under the fill plug.

This will give you an idea not the same car but same theory.

There should be a plug. Can you post a picture? This is where they are on my trans.

Hi Guys, I figured out the open vent is actually fill hole and it was missing the fill plug.
As i bought the car recently ( 4 weeks before) and it was fine for 2-3 weeks i am thinking it has leaked some gear oil and starting to cause issues, so doing the gearbox oil change will sort the probem (lets see will update when its done)
So is there any filter for the gearoil fileration? and is it making sense to change that as well?
Let me know.

The fill plug was missing?

Serious stuff!

I doubt there is anything you can do except rebuild the transmission or get one in a junk yard.

But I might be wrong.

Well I am trying the cheapest solution first ie to change the gearoil and fill it upto optimum level. if that does not work then i will think of getting the one from junk yard.
But my question is if there is any filter that needs to be changed as well during gearoil change??

No there is no filter.

You are right change the oil. You might find metal flakes in the oil. Or you might not. Not is good!

One trick we used to do with a transmission making noise/popping out of gear was change the oil and add a tube of molybdenum additive.

But change the oil and DRIVE THAT SUCKER! If it still pops out of gear my experience (with old VWS) tells me the trans will eventually go. But that might be a long time from now. In the meantime you can further evaluate the car too see if you want to put more $$$$ into it. And find a transmission in a junk yard.

Good luck!

Tell me what happens!

Thanks Bronsin.
do you have any product code/brand etc for this additive "add a tube of molybdenum additive.", and how much you recon to add?

Also there is another link i found about the gear pops:
http://www.mr2.net/trackdayqueen/fithgear.htm

But donot know if the 5th gear is also accessible similarly in yaris?

Hmmm Im in the US so I have a feeling things sold here wouldnt be sold where you live. I would google molybedum additive and see what shows up.

Or ask at a local parts store for the same.

hey guys,
just to update the thread, I changed the gearbox oil and put the missing fill plug.
and from one week so far I have not had a single time a gear slip or popping into neutral.
so moral of the story it was low gear oil that was causing the gear popping to neutral.
thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Awesome.

How that fill plug got out though would make a good story. Ive never seen or heard of that.
