Driver's Door sounds hollow

Bought pre-owned 2008 Yaris and the driver's side door sounds "tinny". The passenger side does not.
Does anyone have a photo of what should be inside (between the interior door panel and the exterior door panel)?

Something is wrong here. I think it was damaged, but it was not on the car fax report. There are shop rags inside of it, and a small piece of styrofoam-like panel. I think there should be more insulation.

Thanks for anyone willing to help.

sedan or hatchback? power windows?

There should be a plastic moisture barrier covering the whole thing for one. There's a little foam but not much.

... shop rags aren't stock :P

both of the doors sound very tinny on mine as well, I'm pretty sure its a normal yaris thing because the others I test drove did the same thing as well. the rear hatch sounds very cheap as well when you close it.

Search for some of the sound deadening threads. THere are pics of the door panels off so you can see what's it there. In a word though, a whole lot of air.

Dont know what the door should look like, but not all damage makes it to a carfax report. Generally only insurance claims do.

the whole car sounds tinny. that is the way they are made... there are folks here who have made significant improvements in bringing the noise levels down and specifically turning that tinny noise you have noticed into a very satisfying "thud" that you get with a more expensive vehicle. I will find a few that i have seen, just a sec.

Maybe the shop rags are someones attempt to deaden the door?

you don't have to do the whole car like these guys are. you can do just the doors and it will solve the problem that you have described. then if you see market improvement and catch the bug... who knows. :) hope that helps. let us know what you find/decide to do.

They are all very hollow or tinny sounding stock. Have the doors sound deadened well and you will not regret it. Sound deadening was one of my first mods to the yaris as i couldnt stand the crappy sound of the door closing. It also(if done correctly) dramatically improves the sound quality in the vehicle.
