Burned out clutch - Toyota Yaris Forums

2008 Yaris. Bought new. Didn't start on day 5 and the clutch wouldn't engage. Took it back to have it fixed and was told that the clutch wouldn't engage if the car mats were in. That didn't fix it. Dealer made an adjustment, but it still wouldn't engage unless the clutch was dead mashed into the floor. The clutch wore out at 88k. Good driver; driven stick many years with no other problems. Anyone else had clutch problems from the start like this????

Not at all. Some have reported some clutch chatter when new, rolled off the lot, but most complain that it's caused more by technician incontinence than product defect. Easily resolved with a quick bleed.

Nope. Original clutch still working in my '07 at over 300,000 miles.

I've driven 14 cars with manual transmissions over the years (2 of those I put over 100,000 miles on) and my Yaris is the ONLY car that needed the clutch replaced. It happened last week with only 33,000 miles on it. I know how to drive a clutch and I don't ride it, nor do I keep it pushed in at stoplights. If you do a search of Toyota clutch replacements other than Yaris, there seem to be quite a few. I filed a dispute with Toyota asking for reimbursement but haven't heard back yet.

Mine wasn't from the start though. I did notice some chatter the past 6 months when we'd had rain or high humidity but that quickly went away.

Digging the Carmine Red. Don't see many of those around here. Please keep us updated on the results of your dispute.

I've got 57k in my '07 and the clutch feels the way it did when I got her 8 yrs ago. Having said that, I did notice a huge difference in terms of how the clutch felt, where it grabbed and the ratio of gas to clutch when coming over to the Yaris from my Civic. I thought I'd end up burning through it quickly because it took some real getting used to.

My clutch was replaced under warranty at about 23,000 miles. I had them put the TRD unit in. Now over 84,000 miles and no issues. That being said, the clutch in my xB went out at 33,000 miles (same powertrain). They had to replace the thing twice before I ended up trading it in on my Yaris.

I went thru a clutch in my Toyota Tercel once .. but the Yaris is fine. 185,000 km (111,000 miles).

My echo's clutch was slipping at 21k km which was replaced under warranty, and again around 42k km. I traded it for the Yaris at 46k km.

I replaced my clutch from my 05 at 290,000 km. It was still within spec, but just.

There is a 'clutch test' one can perform on flat ground...posted somewhere here on the site. I always forget what to do, so have to look it up each time. Last time I performed the test was probably just under 10,000 miles ago....no indication from the test that it needed replacing.

I'm at the same mileage with my 08 sedan and have no clutch problems to date.

145,000 kms, the previous owner of my car had to have the clutch replaced, but he was a terrible clutch rider.

Given the throttle hesitation on the throttle by wire Yaris engine (as opposed to the throttle by cable ECHO) Im not suprised people who normally dont trash clutches are having issues...

Re the Yaris, I wonder why Toyota didn't just leave well enough alone (leave it as throttle by cable like the ECHO) ? Did some other change make the change to drive by wire necessary ?

Replaced the clutch at 250 000 kms. Drove it since 50 000. Don't be desperate to get home, driving through 8 inches of snow will destroy a clutch (melted the clutch springs and wore the pad beyond the metal. Wish I took pics). Great little car. Welded her exhaust back together today.

Probably cheaper as a lot of hardware is eliminated.

My initial reaction to the unacceptable throttle response of my 09 was to take it back to the dealer and say "FIX IT!"

But I had observed on this excellent forum the issue before buying and realized thats just how it is. I didnt think it would be as bad as it was and cant BELIEVE Toyota is getting away with it.

geez, the Yaris seems to be having a lot of clutch problems between 150,000 and 200,000 miles.
seems like a defect or Toyota is really going downhill

seriously, ive spent more time than I ever should on Toyota Nation, and id say a definite attribute to Toyota clutches is they will go a long, long time before needing replaced. sure there are isolated cases, but overall the pattern of longevity is there.

I replaced the clutch in my first corolla at 202,000 miles (though it could have been done a little earlier). My dads camry had a clutch replaced about a year previous to that at 178,000 miles.
