The Vios is based on a lengthened Yaris/Vitz/Echo platform, and it was specifically developed for both the asian and China markets. It is not available in any other parts of the world.

Launched in mid-2003, was the replacement for Toyota's original made-in-Thailand car, the Soluna.

The name VIOS was chosen by Toyota because, in Latin, it means, "to move forward"; and it is wholly appropriate for this model as it sets a new global benchmark for compact family sedans.

The VIOS brings up-to-the-minute technology to the compact family car class, coupled to Toyota's long-standing reputation for reliability, durability and value for money. Targeted at a more youthful customer base with pop princess, Britney Spears, endorsing it, the VIOS looks set to give economy-priced offerings from other makers and countries a good run for their money, with its really decent equipment content.

The VIOS runs a modern 1.5 litre engine with four-valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and intelligent variable valve timing (VVT-i) technology. Power output is a healthy maximum of 109 PS developed at 6,000 rpm, while maximum torque is 142 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Mated to Toyota's 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, swift progress is easily achieved in the VIOS, with the gear ratios smoothly switching from one to another.

very nice presentation from you...
good job...
i see vios as the next generation tercel (what im driving...)
and belta (yaris sedan) as the next generation vios...
although i still think vios is better looking than belta...

soluna looks like a face lifted tercel... maybe they are the same...

If we make an analogy and family trees in Toy, will be:

the same line of the Vios it's the Echo/Vitz/Yaris (motor code NZ)

....but the Tercel shares the family tree of the Paseo, Starlet and Sera (motor code E)

So, I think the Belta and the Vios (and Soluna) are brothers, or maybe the same car but different name.

To add to black_toyojazz, the Vios is classified as an 'Asian car' destined for Asian markets only. It does have some design similiraties with the Yaris (like the engine and the centre console for example).

More pics/info at here.

Comparably, what Vios is to Toyota, the City is to Honda.

More info here.

I have tried to search for the Toyota Vios on Yahoo's site at Taiwan and found a lot of information about it.

Hi. I just discovered the Yaris and am seriously considering buying one when I return to Taiwan later this year, so I was happy to find this website, this forum, and this thread. I wonder if anyone knows anything about this news story?:

"Hotai [Toyota's partner in Taiwan] plans to push two new car models late this year, including the refined version of Camry medium sedan and Yaris sub-compact, and aims to sell about 150,000 units this year, about the same volume as last year."

http://english.www.gov.tw/TaiwanHead...recordid=91622

This would suggest that the company plans to replace or substitute the Vios, as you all have explained it here, with the Yaris, but I couldn't find any info on the Yaris at Toyota's consumer website for Taiwan.

Can anyone confirm that the Yaris will be available in Taiwan this year? A big attraction for the Yaris for me is the shape and the interior. In other small cars my head almost always touches, or nearly touches, the roof, so I am not interested in the Vios (re)design. I also think the Yaris hatchback looks great, aesthetically speaking.

Look forward to any responses. Thanks.

Thanks for a link to that thread -- lots of nice pics. I found another article which suggests that the Taiwan release will include only the 3-dr hatchback and the sedan versions of the Yaris and not the 5-dr hatchback. If so, that will be a disappointment. I can't find the link to that story -- and I don't know how I constructed the search to find it -- or I would post it here.

Found it!:

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/business...GRP=E&id=77294

The relevant 'graph:

"In March, Toyota will launch the Yaris sedan and three-door hatchback, followed by Honda's Fit, a five-door hatchback in April, and Nissan's Versa hatchback in May and a sedan in the fall. The Yaris is a third smaller than the Suburban and weighs almost a ton and a half less."

So no five-door? I won't buy a three-door and the sedan's shape and headroom don't appeal to me. This is too bad, if true.

Another question: I did see Yarises (or "Yarai"? :-)) in Taiwan during my visit last month, so they must have been imported. Any ideas on how much more it would be to import a car to Taiwan? I have never bought a car in Taiwan -- don't know if buying an import is worth the trouble and expense, etc.

i think this is off topic...
if you want to discuss taiwanese yaris...
maybe we should open another thread for that...
let this thread for vios...
hey, you never know... maybe when there are enough taiwanese yaris owners here, we might be able to have our own little sections here...
what i read from somewhere... taiwanese yaris could be made from taiwan...
and seem like they hold up honda fit because they get new civic first...
so if you want a new car soon... yaris would still be your choise...
well, correct me if i am wrong... again...
