Valve Noise

I have had my Yaris for about 6 weeks. I just noticed that after the engine is warmed up, there is a "ticking" noise from the engine. It is typical of when an engine is in need a valve adjustment. However, a new engine shouldn't need a valve adjustment. In doing a little research, these are not the typical type of valves to adjust. You have to measure your clearance, do a little math, and replace the lifters with ones of differant size.. Boy!!.

So... Am I being to critical of the engine / valve train noise? When the engine is started and cold, it is a quiet as can be. Once warmed up, the valves are ticking.

I have owned several 4 cylinder powered cars and none have ticked.

Someone said that it may be the fuel injectors I am hearing. This would not explain why when the engine is cold that the sound is not there.

I guess I should bring it in but warranty or not, taking in a car is a pain in the a$$.

Anyone else have a ticking engine?

I noticed a similar kind of sound on mine after driving for a while and opening the hood. Then we checked a friend's Corolla and it had a similar kind of sound.

I'm not sure if it's the same in your case but the sound did seem to come from the belt, not the engine itself.

I may ask the technician about it at the next service, but it does not seem like anything serious, maybe just part of the engine breaking in.

It's normal to have some slight valve tick

It's better to have a little noise/tick then no noise/tick. No valve noise means the tolerances are too small.
Heavy ticking means the tolerances are too big.
When the engine is cold the oil is heavy and excessive roping is common until oil temps reach normal operatin temps, also the engine tolerances change as the engine heats up.

Do yourself a favor and start usinga good synthetic oil like Amsoil or Redline then you won't have to worry about valve adjustments for a VERY VERY long time.

Same sound here.

I have it between the 1500-3000rpm.

Then it goes off.

My 01 Tacoma ticks really loud at idle, ever since I bought it with 13K miles on it. Upon closer inspection, it was the injectors.
As long as the ticking doesn't increase as the engine speed increases, it's not an issue.

Especially a new engine might be in need of valve adjustment. The noise you hear doesn't necessarily mean a valve with too much gap. However, too tighten valves don't make any noise and it's even more damaging. A gap check at the first oil change would be a good idea.

It's a Toyota thing. I have had several Toyota 4 cylinders and they all seem to "tick". My 99' Tacoma 2.7L ticked loudly from the time I got with 30,000 miles untill I sold it with 117,000. It never caused a problem or got any worse, just always did it. Toyota's 22R also is notorious for loud ticking. Now my new Yaris ticks. I'm sure your car is fine.

Yep, a little ticking means the engine is running normally.

Same noise here. Sounds like a little diesel when it's hot and idling.
I won't worry until a rod comes through the hood. :)

my 93 (or 95???) altima ticked...

then one fateful day doing 125 on the highway... it threw a rod right through the radiator. Was a very fun car to drive, i'd say even more so than the yaris

that post was entirely on topic, btw.

Thought it was just the injectors? Or maybe time is running out, and the last tick will be my last..

I've got a conspiracy theory. IT'S THE NORMAL SOUND OF THE MOTOR, NOT VALVE TICKING!!!
