Differential Repair

The differential on my 2009 Yaris with manual transmission is failing after 210K miles. I have removed the transmission and have the differential out and the gears are loose and worn along with bearings. I am having a hard time finding the parts to repair the differential. Is there a kit out there that I can't find to repair the differential or can i buy an assembled differential and drop it in? Trying to figure out the parts has been more trouble than getting it apart.

Toyota Yaris manual transmission repairs

I think the complexity of transmission repairs (including numerous special tools) on this sort of vehicle, how long tranny's last, and how many cars are supplying reasonably priced used ones below 100k miles make even opening manual transmissions a rarity.

FWD manual transmissions really are not that complex on the inside (unlike automatic transmissions). Rockauto sells some of the bearings, but for the gears it's a low failure part so your only option maybe new through Toyota. I think a better option would be a good used transmission from a junkyard. If you're to pull one yourself most self serve junkyard charge around $100 for a manual transaxle (aka FWD transmission) and many of the self serve yards have occasional 40-50% off weekend sales. Then you can use it as a donor or just straight swap it.

I have considered getting a used transmission from the self serve junkyard but not excited about having to get it out in the yard on my own. Also finding a manual Yaris in a junkyard around me is rare.

Well I got lucky and found a transmission in a salvage yard for $77 and it is back on the road again.

Good job. What were the hardest steps in the transmission swap?

I haven't been on the forums much lately, otherwise I would have been happy to part with one of my spares. Glad to hear you got it sorted out!

That's good news mate. If you replaced the clutch while you were at it you should have another 100,000+ miles of trouble free driving ahead. I've never heard of the diffs failing in the Toyota FWD boxes. Only issues I've seen with them is bad synchro rings.
