Talking Ghetto audio mod.

OK, so I was lucky enough to get my hands on an 07 Yaris Liftback. I got it totally stock and actually paid what the web site said I would pay. That mericle asside, I had NO TUNES. I have a little crappy Jensen head unit ready to go, out of my old car. It is nothing special but hey, it works. Anyway it is my understanding that it uses the same wiring harness as the Echo, but there is no dash adaptor yet. So, I had these Creative Labs computer speaker set. It has a Sub and 2 little cube style sat's. So I placed the sub in the trunk, ran the aucio in, from an extension cable to the front where i plug in my iPod. I stuck the little cube sat speakers in the center console cubbies. THen I plugged in my very old 140 watt inverter into the 12V accessory port, running it carefully under the drivers seat to meat the power brick just behind my seat. That power cord from the brick, the speaker wires and the unput line all travel neatly along the floor under the Yaris floor mats, tucking along the drivers side rear seat.

These speakers retailed for $30 US from Fry's Electronics about 18 months ago. I had them new in box because they where given to me and I never had a use for them. They are not tooooo bad, but are not super great ether. Waaaaay better than nothing at all and for some reason, the shape of the car lends it self well to the acustics of the speakers. A few pics below. And of course, if someone knows of an official single DIN head unit dash kit (not a hack) please let me know.

Comments/questions/flames welcome.

Here you can see the sat's. The wire tucks under the center console a little, only to help keep the wire agains the center console.

Amazingly, they do not fall out. THey are just lightly wedged in there. You can also see the power plug for the inverter there.

All hooked up. Rocking the electronic music. ;p

The little sub is on the left side.

That's ghetto as hell. Nice job tho. If you hit the gas too hard, do the speakers fall forward?

I was referring to the ipod/speaker install as ghetto :)

If the car came with no headunit... does that mean it came with no speakers at all? I cant think of the last time cars were sold without a tape deck / cd player! Even cars in the 1970s came with radios.

Most Fleet cars and trucks can be ordered this way. All our work trucks are like this, no radio, no heat / AC, manual this and that, etc.

I hear it actually add's to the price, when ordering with NO radio.

It has the speakers installed as far as I can tell. From what I recall the "Audio prep package" (that is the 4 speakers) is standard in the bone Yaris.

Anyways your mod beats the solo sound mod (except you happen to be a singer!)

Naw they are just the right size. Have not has a problem with that at all. I was going to file in a notch on both speakers to keep them in place on the edge of the cubby's but they stay put.

The speakers are there, along with the antenna, and all the wiring. I am just waiting for the dash adaptor to become available. Then I will install my head unit, and I think I am going to insall a little tiny (but good) sub woofer where the current one is. I am thinking those factory speakers are going to need a little help. I do not need THUMPA THUMPA THUMPA.... Just something to give a little more flavor to the music. :)

I can tell you from experience that it does not cost more for less. The Radio was like 200 bux. For that you get a fairly boring double DIN CD Player and FM Radio. For 400 bux, add MP3'WMA playback and an AUX in port.

I opted for the low cost of nothing, to keep my little Jensen and use it's AUX imports like I did in my old car. ^.-.^

So even without the OEM cd/mp3 player --- the factory cd player loom still exists?

Well I have not actually looked behind the place holder plate on the dash, because I am not sure how to get it off. But everybody at the Toyota dealership assured me the wires/speakers where there for at least the default CD Player/FM Radio unit.

My point was, on a FLEET car, they DO NOT install any harness, antenna, speakers, headunit... When it has to take that exit off the factory assy., line route (lol), im told it costs the buyer (companies using fleet) a few extra, being everything was either installed already, and gets removed, or never gets added in the first place.

Glad to see you at least got some stuff, as you wont have to be pulling wire every where when doing your audio.
