Problem....
While I was out and about today the Yaris started to have a bit of an issue. I lost power @ 3k+ or under heavy acceleration followed by a flashing CEL. CEL would disappear below 3k. The engine sounds bogged down and runs choppy...scanguage did not show a code the entire time.
If I had to guess I'd say cylinder misfire. I'm going to pull the plugs in the morning and go from there. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be a coil or something(coils are ebay cheapos). Anybody want to venture a guess on this one? Worst case is a swap, a local wrecker has a 22K mile 08' motor for 1k installed....I'm really ok with that, it would go hand in hand with my turbo build and save me from having to get towed from who knows where if I were to turbo the current 250-300K mile motor.

Pulled the plugs and coils, when I put them back the car finally threw a steady p0301 code...I'm just not sure which cylinder may be misfiring at this point, or if it's the cat(doesn't smell like it, although I have noticed a rich smell lately...just no rotten eggs), or an o2 censor. I'm going to run it by the shop, I have extras of everything but the cat so I'll take the 90 dollar hit for the diagnostic this time instead of spending all day messing with it.

did you find out the problem ?
wasn't spark plug wires was it? you can test them with a multimeter, just check the resistance. |

Not yet, I'm out of town for a couple of days per week for work. When I get home I'll run it by the shop. I'm not 100% on how to test them really, I'm not very handy with a multimeter for much more than pos/neg.

The 1NZ doesn't have spark plug wires. Could be an issue with a coil. P0301 is cyl #1 misfire, may consider swapping coil #1 with another cylinder and seeing if the code changes.

Yeah, I thought you meant coils... I didn't realize it was #1 cylinder, the scangauge didn't give me anything other than the code. I'll swap out #1 with a denso coil I have and see where it goes. Thanks for the info!

#1 coil was faulty, swapped it out for the old denso I had on hand and cleared the code. Now it runs like new again.
Big thanks to Johhny Vitz for the info, u saved me 1 hour of shop labor....I owe you one.
