Crashy Lives

After a bit of suspension reshaping on my ebay wreck with a 12 ton bottle jack, I was able to actually drive Crashy (as my kids have come to call it). The front wheels now point in the same direction, instead of out in opposite directions. The right side lower suspension arm and tie rod end were bent rearward over three inches. I was able to bend it back with the 12 ton jack, after popping the seal on a 4 ton one. Last week, when I first fired it up the automatic transmission was leaking. With that I found that I hadn't fully seated the left drive axle. After popping it in fully the AT hasn't leaked a drop.

Today I drove it around the yard to check out the AT, and it seems to be perfectly fine. I originally planned to pull the engine and transmission, but now that I have a fully mobile test platform, I think I'll leave engine in. With the windows and doors off, it's fun to drive. The roof is coming off next.

Below is a short video of it in motion.

Three cheers for Crashy for its invaluable contribution to the SRS project and all those I'm sure will follow!

Back in the days of cars with frames under them it was quite popular to make a "cut-down" out of a wrecked car.

In the '80s I gave some thought to trying that with a burned Jaguar XJ-S V12.

Taking the roof off will make this unibody pretty flexy, I think.

That's TOO cool! I want one!

Dont' cut the roof just yet. As mentioned above, the car WILL bend in the middle after you cut the roof. So, before you do it, better weld in some sort of a support hoop, or at least weld in some door supports.

I was going to say something, but I'm kind of a let the other person do what he wants and see what happens. I too would leave the roof on for structural reasons or at least weld some serious side bars on it

Yup roll cage in lieu of roof. And I agree this needs to be stickied so we can all follow Crashy's progress.

That video reminds me of the moon buggy!
