Misfire and engine light

Hi guys, first post but I'm in need of some help.

My girlfriend has a 99 Yaris 1.3 vvti and for about a year now, it's had the engine light on.

We took it to a garage soon after it came on and they just turned it off.
Anywho, about 6 months ago it started misfiring when really cold and at certain revs. Normally really high, or really low.

Now I'll assume some sensor has gone, like an air flow, or lambda or something like that. (New fangled electronic cars!).

So how can I read the error code? I've read about bridging connections and reading error codes off the rev counter. Can that be done on a Yaris?

Do the symptoms sound like anything obvious?

Thanks

Gaz

how do you know its misifiring? typically misfires are a blinking check engine light....

Well, I say misfire. I've only diagnosed mis-fire from previous experience. It's how it feels.

It feels like the car's holding back. If you come off the throttle and get back on, it normally sorts it. Or come slightly off full-throttle.

So I need an ODB2 scanner?

Lovely thanks. I'll see if I can borrow one. If not I'll buy one (after checking for this port).
Then I assume it'll tell me what's wrong, and I'll get my hands dirty and fix it.
