2013 Vios - Let's hope Toyota brings it to N. America

I know leaked images were posted someone on here a little while back, can't find where. But here are nice official photos.

Officially launched a few weeks ago at the Bangkok auto show (apparently the biggest market for the Vios).

Looks really good. Toyota NEEDS to bring this over as the new Yaris sedan (2014?). Nearly everyone offers a subcompact sedan, it makes no sense that Toyota, the world's largest automaker, would ignore the segment in America after they have sold well here in the past. They shouldn't leave Corolla as the only sedan choice at the small end as it continues to get bigger.

And clearly the Yaris Liftback has had very mediocre sales in it's first year and a half. Americans buy more sedans.

Interior is a huge upgrade.

Notice that unlike the 2nd gen Vios/Vitz/Yaris duo, the sedan and hatch share nothing except some mechanicals. Totally different interiors.

Yea, Toyota quite selling the sedan because it sold more than the liftback.

I can see you are Toyota's executive management team!

You are an idiot. That isn't what he is saying at all.

Personally I like the looks of the interior...nice refresh. Not so sure about the exterior as it is a mash up of other autos in their line up and even other manufacturers. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I did say in general that sedans sell far better than hatches in America.

As for Yaris, from 2007 though the introduction of the 5-door hatch, the sedan and hatch sold 50/50. Once there were two hatch styles, they began to outsell the sedan.

In my area, Yaris sedans outnumber hatches at least 4-1. Not sure why.

Same engine and transmission on a bigger and heavier car...no thanks. Not a fan of the design either.

I drove a 2013 5-dr hatchback as my rental car when I was in Indianapolis last week. I absolutely hated the speedometer being on the driver's side. I'm sad to see the new sedan is moving to that again too. I think it being in the center makes it unique.

Same in my area. I see way more sedans. It is probably 6 - 1 around here.

one reason why they may keep it out is cos its to close in price with the Corolla , Yaris is great as a basic transportation in base or LE model. SE is at same price as a loaded Corolla in which case is a no brainier. Most ppl will buy Corolla its what we see at my place, the hb Yaris is to attract younger crowed... compete with Mazda 2 and little Ford.
So if you want a sedan get a Corolla ..bigger motor more room and so on.

Just my 2 cents

PS what i like about the new hb Yaris is that its all the same under , easy to work on and fun to drive brings out the kid in me :) love my 07 but next will be a newer Yaris two door black ...may even ger AC with it lol and power windows haha

Maybe I'm getting old, but it just looks like another Corolla to me.

Not sure why Toyota is stalling the advancement in engine and transmission tech in the low end of their cars including the current gen Corolla - 4 speed auto? Come on Toyota. Should of been a 5-speed 5 years ago. Should be a 6-speed in the 2014 model.

No doubt it's one of the reasons the 3rd gen Yaris hatch has slow sales. People expect a 40mpg EPA number in these cars and Toyota missed the chance.

That was reportedly Toyota's reasoning when it was announced that the sedan was being dropped from the US. They want to sell you a Corolla no doubt. For most buyers, it makes sense, but some would like the choice of buying a smaller and bit more affordable sedan. Toyota sold a lot of Yaris sedans after all.

Problem with Toyota's strategy here is that most competitors now offer a sub-compact sedan. Fiesta, Sonic, Accent, Rio, Versa...

Most importantly, it's not like Toyota is saving money on not building a subcompact sedan. It's being built, they just need to ship it here with slight modifications to meet US specs. There's only money to be made.

How 'bout a C.V.T. ? Didn't mind it with the PRIUS we had . Test drove a '12 SUZUKI SX-4 and had plenty of pep . A 5 speed auto would be a nice feature . The 5 speed auto of the '11 FIT coasts / glides very well . Does more hunting when climbing hills . Can be a bit annoying . A trade off .
