Question Toyota Yaris Optimal RPM for Highways

Hello,

I have a question regarding the basic operation of a Toyota Yaris when cruising on a highway.

I own a Toyota Yaris 2010 model, living in Europe/Romania, with the following specs:

VIN: VNKKH98370A089720
Engine: Dual VVT-i 1.33 L
Capacity: 1329 cm3 (74 kWh)
Fuel: Gasoline
Redline: 6200 RPM
Max: 7500 RPM
Max Torque: @ 4000 RPM according to the datasheet
Transmission: Manual, 6+1 gear

My question is:
I need to travel on highways in the near future.
What is the OPTIMAL RPM for Cruising on Highways ?
(I do not want to cruise as a snail, but also, I don't want to race like an F1 car either).

I am talking about cruising safely on the highway, with no thoughts of engine wearing or damaging components and optimal fuel consumption, if possible. If not, let's say fuel is not so important. I am more concerned about cruising at safe RPMs while also reaching my target in a reasonable time.

As I understand, if cruising with more than 4000 RPM (after the Max Torque threshold) the car begins to loose power and efficiency, and after 6200 we meet the redline.

In the 6-th gear @ 3000 RPM it cruises @ 120 Km/h (tested by me)

So, what is the optimal RPM for normal cruising without having to worry about engine damage ? 3000, 3200, 3500 or even the max torque ?

Thank you !

Hi there - I'm no expert, but I've heard repeated discussion about speed impacting fuel economy, not as much about RPM. As I've understood it, 50 miles per hour (approx. 80 kph) is a good threshold for air resistance. The hypermilers that used to frequent this forum would preach about the importance of keeping it below 50 for maximum FE. Again, not an expert by any means, just repeating what I've consistently read here, so take it for what it's worth.

I recently got a new job that requires me to do a lot more driving than I normally would. My daily commute is about 80 km/day. So far running at an average of 100km/h, i'm averaging around 6L/100km. I'll update once i fill up again and can get some solid numbers.

Note: I have the 1.5L engine. Your 1.3L should give you a lower consumption number.

22,750 RPM. that's the best.

just cruse at a comfortable speed. it does not really matter. the slower it turns, the less it will wear. science. but, the question is moot. if all you do is drive around in 6th putt-putt-putting at sub 2000, you will cause carbon build up all over the place and foul the catalytic converter. (imo) you need to get it hot to burn that stuff out. the engine should be driven the way it was designed to...
regular maintenance is more important. do the maintenance and it will have minimal issues, in most situations.

My Yaris has a 1.33L VVT-i.
I just cruise in 6th (120kph).

If things need to go faster -> downshift.

Also when getting up to highway speeds I stay in a lower gear to build up speed faster (ignore the shift indicator). Once wanted speed is reached, go to 6th.

With heavy winds(stormy weather) or inclines, 120 kph can be to much in 6th gear.

i drive at 125kph for an hour each way 3 days a week with my 1nzfe. the car happily hums along at 3500rpm.

for fuel economy get skinny tires

I think you don't need to worry about engine damage if you are not running at redline the whole time. Your car isn't going to overheat that quickly.

I have a 1.3l with 64kw and only 5 speed and i cruise between 130 kp/h and 140 kp/h.
I can't tell you the rpms right now, but in that rev range the car stays pretty quite.
When i drive only 120 kp/h the engine seems like it needs to work way harder and it is louder.
Probably because the revs are lower and the torque and power output isn't as high anymore.

Anyways going 160 kp/h for a longer time isn't a problem, but fuel consumption will be pretty high obviously :D

Greetings from Germany the land of the Autobahn, where you can go 193 kp/h in a Yaris.

Also i do not recommend breaking the speed limit or any other law while driving.
I know for some 140 kp/h sounds pretty high for just cruising, but that's pretty much a the average here in Germany.
Recommended speed is 130 kp/h on the Autobahn, but of course you can drive as fast as you want, when there is no restriction.
Also at higher speed you won't notice the engine noise anymore, because the wind and tire noise is louder.
I'm not saying the Yaris is a bad build car, but it could be a little quieter.

Optimal rpm is subjective to what each driver wants to achieve. For mileage it's a low speed to reduce wind resistance and lower rpm so the engine isn't working as hard but not too low where it is inefficient.

For engine life a lower rpm will lead to less wear but as stated above If you don't go wot once in a while you'll have carbon build up.

Imo a hard driven well maintained engine will last almost as long as a babied slowly driven engine. Is a reduction in 10k miles over a life of a car really make a significant difference? No it doesn't, no one knows the exact amount of miles you'll remove from an engine by driving it hard but if you take care of it very well much of that is moot.

Fwiw my 1nz I sold had 178k km on it of fairly hard driving for its last 50k km and it was very well maintained. It didn't burn a single drop of oil between 15k km oil change intervals (UOA verified)

I had two company cars with the 1nr-fe. One Yaris Nsp90 and an Urban Cruiser .
I did about 50000km on both of them. I had them for 1 year and a half each. Due to the nature of my work all of those km where like massive test drives .
They both consumed around 9-10 lt/100 km when asked to give all the available power and required a lot of downshifting if you wanted to maintain a good average speed over mountains and steep highway uphills.

The 1NR engine will do better in the long run when driven at high rpm rather than slow urban trips. 6th gear is for a hypothetical 250km on the speedo and even at the steepest downhill I havent managed to see anything over 210km/h.
(urban cruiser).

My advise is find the fuel economy rating vs the average speed and see what is better for you. Keep in mind that there is absolutely nothing to worry about reliability in your engine when in high rpm. On the contrary low speed low rpm short trips will coke up piston rings and valve seats and you will have a problem. Enjoy your ride

My 1KR 5 speed seems most efficient at around 2-3K RPM which equates to about 45-60mph in 5th. When i was in Norway with the low speed limits (80km/hr) i was getting around 57-60 MPG according to my car.

When i cruise on the motorway in excess of 80mph its really starting to get up there to 4000 or 5000rpm, although i haven't managed to blow my car up yet. I wish i had a 6th gear!

My Yaris bumbles along nicely at 70mph with the engine turning at 2200 rev/min.
